The debate of "is queer a slur" is complicated but I'm on the side of "it's a reclaimed umbrella term that is useful for discussion of a general idea". Since LGBTQIA+ is a mouthfull to many, and the defences of it being a slur were ludicrous to me
Thanks to all for the input,in Ireland, it's not a term I would use because I thought (could be wrong)& always viewed it to be offensive. We would tend to use the word "Queer" alot here though for its actual definition "its queer aul weather out there today, one minute its sunny next minute its raining" or "that chap down the road always looking out the window is a queer (strange, odd) aul fella"
It's come full circle here in England @Jmcg85 - all of my gay friends refer to themselves as Queer. When I was a kid it was an offensive term so I've always steered clear of using it but every year the acronym seems to get longer to an old fart like me. I think we're at lgbtqiapk now and I struggle to remember them all without looking them up.
Yeah the fact its definition means Strange, Odd, I would of thought calling someone that offensive. The whole article didnt sit right with me. Different strokes for different folks though @duke86fan
I cant keep up with it either personally, it's like a minions movie plot to steal all the letters of the alphabet away from the straight folk lol I joke. Just remembered now Aidan Gillen (littlefinger) was in the British TV show "Queer As Folk". I dont think it's as widely accepted in ROI though, I certainly would refrain from using it @Mr Moore
It was definitely a slur here for some time, but as Dukey notes, it's been well reclaimed. I'm sure there are folks who remember it being hurled against them who may not like it though.
Its interesting to hear all this, that was only intention posting the status because I wondered, I never knew it was so widely accepted across the pond. Every day is a school day @GritNGlitter
I will note there are some people who still think queer is a slur, especially YouTubers like NB ace transman Milo "used to be attacked by transphobic assholes" Stewart and trans woman Lily "2 hour video about Steven universe" Orchard
Obviously I don't speak for the entire LGBTQ+ community, but as a member of the community, the word does not offend me. I use it regularly as an umbrella term to describe the community and also have friends who use it as their identifier.
I do know that there are some people within the community that do not like the use of the word and do not appreciate the current movement to reclaim it. Typically the older crowd who 1. don't understand reclamation and/or 2. who really experienced the word as a slur for the majority of their lives. But I also think tides are turning on it as it has become more colloquial due to reclamation.
