Fresh Grabs

Some new stuff…

Rainy Day Records in Oly was having a 20% off all new and used records sale this past weekend so I head down there and picked up these:
IMG_7653.jpeg
Matt McMicken & The Everexpanding - Shabang
Spectrum - Forever Alien
Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Perscription
Brand Nubian - All For One
Majesty Crush - Butterflies Don’t Go Away
Ben Lee - Something To Remember Me By
The Sharp Pins - Radio DDR

The noteworthy ones are the Spectrum and Ben Lee albums both are original pressings from 1997.

Then I headed over to Hi-Voltage when I got back to Tacoma. I had a 20% off punch card to use and picked up these:

The Hard Quartet - The Hard Quartet
Liz Phair - Whip-Smart
Preston School Of Industry - Goodbye To The Edge City EP

The biggest one here is the 1994 original pressing of Liz Phair’s Whip-Smart on white vinyl. The jacket is a bit stained but considering it’s 31 years old I will let it slide.

Then on the home front, I had these delivered by various delivery services over the weekend:

Elliott Smith - XO IVC Edition
Clikatat Ikatowi - The Trials And Tribulations Of…
Oranger - New Come And Goes
His Name Is Alive - Livonia
Juliana Hatfield - Hey Babe

The interesting albums here are Juliana Hatfield and His Name Is Alive, both are original pressings that I acquired in an eBay bundle deal from a seller in the U.K. Also, That Oranger album is an original 2005 pressing and is a bit of an overlooked gem from that era. It’s been on my Discogs wantlist for a while but just recently scooped up one that had been posted for a pretty cheap price. I noticed the Vinyl has a different track order than the CD. Curious if that was just to get the whole album on a single disc?

Great haul on those 90s albums

I went on down a rabbit hole with Juliana Hatfield recently, her label had a sale, which led me to to her early albums with Blake Babies, a band I wasn’t familiar with, that led me to her debut which isn’t currently in print so I figured I would just pick up an OG copy and I found one for a decent price on eBay but it was in the U.K. so to justify the extra shipping cost I went through his other offerings and decide I should also grab the OG copy of His Name Is Alive’s debut album as well.

Decided to splurge a bit more this month to pick up a “Blood Records Edition” on an Album that was in my top 5 last year.

For April

Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us

I’ve been chasing this album for a while but it was always very expensive to ship from the US. I was glad to see a wider release:

For May - awkward it showed up on my Wife’s Bday and she thought I had bought her something - oops.

Mk.gee - Two Star & The Dream Police

Looked what just arrived 👀

This is the first of two albums I've ordered on vinyl in... about a year? (the other is still on its way). When the price of vinyl and shipping went up, I really couldn't justify it anymore... But when an album is as good as this one (and as good as the one still on its way), I had to make an exception. Can't wait to spin this one!

Messa 🇮🇹- The Spin (2025) [Scarlet Doom]
Sara - Vocals, Lyrics
Alberto - Guitars, Piano, Synthesizers
Marco - Bass, Synthesizer
Rocco - Drums
Not familiar with Messa? Check out my write-ups on The Spin here and here.

Semi-local shop #1

Lester Bowie - Fast Last!
Herbie Hancock - Perfect Machine

Excited to find a copy of Lester Bowie in the bins. Has been on the list for a while now. Going in blind on Perfect Machine. It's one of the few Herbie albums I haven't heard.

Final finds. Most everything looks and sounds great on first play. Sleeves for Mwandishi and Parliament are imperfect.

Nina Simone - Black and Gold
Parliament - Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome
Charles Lloyd - Moon Man
Pharoah Sanders - Live at the East
Herbie Hancock - Mwandishi
Doug Carn - Revelation
