I wasn’t around back then, so I have no idea why there were only 10 records released in 2014 (skipping August and November)

EDIT: alright, I added Perfume Genius to 2014. VMP doesn’t have that volume listed in its archives, but it was Vol. 23, as Teeeee points out below. I’m going to make another edit for Vol. 20 when I find out what it is. So they didn’t skip any, they just didn’t properly list it in the archives

I think 2017 was their best year... craziest exclusives and best variants. Some not so great ones like tennis and St. Vincent, but still an all around awesome year with the reissue of demon days and first release of fiona apple.

To me, it looks like 2015 was da bomb. But I hear ya, 2017 looks real solid too

Perfume Genius is missing from 2014. It was my 1st month. I think several old timers on here joined during that month also.

War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream was one you missed from 2014. I’d give someone else’s right arm to get that!

2019 looks like an improvement over 2018 to me (though Feist was one of the greatest VMP releases along Gorillaz and Fiona in my view). 2017 is the best for me, but it had several I disliked just like any year (for me those were Panda Bear, Sumney and The National).

You leave that St Vincent alone, it was my album of the year in 2017! I just didn’t want it because I preferred the standard Pink I got in my local store....

Also Moses Sumney 😍😍😍

2019 has been killer honestly. The few I didn't want (Loretta Lynn, Van Morrison, and SK) I honestly just skipped. And even then those albums were more interesting than some that I did get when I originally did a year subscription, I'm looking at you Torres, Wilco, Blessed Feathers and Nada Surf. But opinions.

I do think VMP needs the odd Big Name (Queen, Sabbath, Arctic Monkeys) along with the more obscure stuff, otherwise it’s getting a bit ..up it’s own arse.

If you look at the what’s spinning pages ...there’s a massive disconnect to what we’re playing (or posting) and what they’re offering every month ....

Never a fan of obscurity for obscurity’s sake .. that way lies hipster territory

I'm more of a fan of these bigger picks then the crate digger stuff most of the time. I don't have alot of what they list as essential on the 100 list.

I've been a member since 2015. I hopped on at Hot Chip. 2015 was also my favorite year of releases followed by 2017. I've never had a problem with their curation for AOTM. However, I think the whole thing got turned on its head when they decided to add the "Essentials" tag on the AOTM to differentiate it from the other track. People started having that whole "this isn't an essential pick" conversation then whereas it was never even a topic of discussion prior to that.

I have all the VMP releases (outside of Sylvan Esso which I gifted to someone) and I have always been happy with that as I am a completionist. However, this past 6-8 months have made it less appealing to own all AOTMs that now fall under Essentials. I'll probably hop off when my year is up and just console myself that I have the complete catalog up until the point where I stopped caring.

We joined on the same record! But I jumped off a while ago.

Joined at the start of 2016.

We had a good rookie year that season, but 2017 we really hit it out of the park. Hell our bench was so deep we spun off a whole 2nd team. But really since 2018 we have been living on past glories. The seats are half full and most of the punters coming out the games are there to boo us, hurl insults and toss their over-priced, watered down beer at us.

Hi Teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! The last two weeks have been nutbar for me in terms of work. So it’s left very little time for any pleasurable things. But I miss you too! And hope to be back on the JQBX wagon in earnest next week.

Twins!!! This is why we get along so well. That and pretty much everything else, that is.

I have to say, I’m regretting my decision not to cancel earlier this year.

I like U.F.O. OK. It’s just there are other lesser known albums from a similar ballpark that are 100 times better. Something like No Other by Gene Clark isn’t that well known but is just a superb album that gets better with each listen. For their ultimate crate digger album too, I had already heard this. The Lewis album was a better LITA gem. It’s fine, really, but with charging $42 for one month for an overseas subscription this won’t be tempting me soon. Plenty of copies on eBay next month anyway.
