Apple 100

I was gonna make a post in the hot takes thread, but decided you guys might actually want to talk about it, enjoy my takes.

Second post will be what I would Rank them.

Made it to Astroworld so far.

Robyn was great. I get the Martin sound there were a lot of similarities to 1989.

Eagles are Eagles although I am softening to them over time, nostalgia for the good old classic rock radio days.

Now, the feature for the time being… Is Travis Scott’s popularity a function of Kanye’s toxicity? This is the first one I just don’t like and I haven’t even finished a first listen or read up on what I’m supposed to get from it.

Im on a 16 hr work shift right now so Ill play for a bit. Listening to Robyn right now. I have a good idea what I'll rank the first 3, but want to listen to them all again first.

These first 3 are all decent albums though none would make my personal top 100, and will probably all fall in the bottom quarter of this list. Eagles takes the lead based off of familiarity as I grew up on these songs. Hotel California the song is great, though 99% of you nerds probably disagree. Robyn is one of the handful of dance pop albums I do enjoy, but is a genre way out of wheelhouse. Travis is also decent though I prefer 'Rodeo' from him.

I think the Eagles get a lot of undo shit because of The Big Lebowski. Like how Coldplay got shit early on because of 40 Year Old Virgin. Maybe now it's more valid. The production value on Hotel California is fantastic. New Kid in Town is a beautiful song. The instruments all sound great. The harmonization is really good. It is a very well produced album in the same vein as something Steely Dan would do. Or maybe I just have a soft spot for it because hearing it in 5.1 on my DVD-Audio was a revelation.

They were buddies with the Dan.

Pure Heroine isn't quite up to the level of Melodrama but man, it has aged well. Likely the first ethereal sounding album I listened to that permeated Top40 radio in the early 2010s. "Royals" was a mind-bending revelation of a single to me; it is impressive that Ella was barely 16 at the time of release.

👀 Robin Thicke on production for "Can U Handle It?" 👀
No wonder that was uncomfortable to listen to. Longest song on the album at that. ☠️

The rest of Confessions is fine with classic 00s R&B production; Usher was in his prime here. Revisiting this for the first time in a few years, I have newfound enjoyment in "Simple Things." I would be very OK with never hearing "Yeah!" ever again.

Lee’s rankings:

4. Travis Scott - Astroworld
3. Eagles - Hotel California
2. Robyn - Body Talk
1. Rage Against the Machine
Slotting Rage at the front so far. I have a complicated relationship to this album. I still very much dislike Zach’s voice and flow. When this hit, I couldn’t get down with their anger and they seemed pretentious. However, instead of mellowing on their concept over time, I find them just as needed if not more now. The band always seemed like something I wanted to listen to. Anyhow, in some parallel universe, I got this when it came out and am some kind of political activist.

George Michael's Listen Without Prejudice Vol. I is...sophistiSLOP. I only recognized "Freedom '90" immediately, and maybe one other track. It seems too try-hard. That big track actually sounds out of place with ballads that occupy a majority of the tracklist.
I don't deny that George Michael was a talented singer. It should not be on this list.
