Shabaka – Afrikan Culture
Got to see Shabaka perform live in Portland last night with his sextet. I have seen Sons of Kemet (and The Comet Is Coming) perform live a number of times, and wasn't sure his new direction would capture my attention to the same extent. Well, needless to say, I was flat out wrong – it was an incredible performance. The new direction is astounding – deeply spiritual, beautiful and very powerful. Shabaka played the shakuhachi and probably a dozen other custom flutes, and was joined by Portland native Esperanza Spalding on bass on vocals. The rest of the band: Charles Overton (harp), Chris Sholar (keys/electronics), Burniss Travis (electric bass), Austin Williamson (drums).
