The Blue Note Thread

Anyone see the madness over the Andrew Hill TP release over on Hoffman? I didn't dive into the thread but from what I can tell, people are saying the piano on side 2 is out of tune.... or the pressing is off-center.... ?

I have it and I've listened a couple times so far, can't say I hear any audible issues with pitch, but I also can't pretend like I have the best ears for that sort of thing.

And if this is the only problem out of the series so far... good job to BN and Joe Harley.

Seems Harley did not take well to the criticism and has dropped off the thread this week. Which really sucks. (Jazz fans can be real jerks.)

That’s so weird. Is just the piano is out of tune? Wouldn’t all of the instruments be out of tune then if it was that far off center, causing pitch issues? Unless Hill’s piano was intentionally out of tune in the first place but that’s doubtful. I can’t say I’ve ever listened to that album that closely and probably wouldn’t be able to tell if it was slightly out of tune in the first place...

I may be crazy, but I perceived the same issue with the piano onn both Etc and Contours. It was super weird, though, because I can only only hear it on the first few seconds of side B. It sounds as if the tape started playing at a slower speed and then catch up

Joe assures everyone that it was an issue present on the master and that anything short of going in digitally and changing the affected portions artificially note by note would not help. Anyway, it's a small issue that only people who can readily decipher pitch would notice.

Man, this Joel Ross album is really hitting the spot. Like, I remember sampling it when it was announced and thinking it was good, but this is really fucking good.

By the way, my copy had a sticker on the back that said "Made in Canada". Wonder which pressing plant this indicates?

Does yours play okay? Mine was warped and had a bad non-fill on track C1.
