Definitive Audiophile pressings

Cheers!

I’ve actually made a decision on these. I’m not going to. Had these come out 2 years ago I’d likely have bought this and 2 or 3 more.

Now? I am just so happy with the BG box break out of this that I’m going that way with Court and Spark too when it comes out in a couple of weeks. My Japanese OGs of For The Roses and Clouds are just brilliant too.

Makes it actually quite easy not to spend nearly €200 one of these. These might be better. They won’t be €160-€170 an album better.
Do you happen to know whether the upcoming breakout of Court and Spark is different in any significant way from Grundman's 2013 cut?

I dunno but because rhino used to do weird stuff like this I have a cut of the same vintage by mr HL of optimal back office. So this box break out is definitely coming to my table.

I’d assume this is a break out from the box set so you could check the runouts on discogs to see!

Also I’m delighted that MoFi are visiting Joni and releasing these (hopefully a nice standard 45 or 33 follows). Joni is such a talent but her catalogue has not been even remotely mined enough.

It’s just that on this occasion these are not the right proposition for me.
I think her estate has been doing a pretty solid job at the reissues. Obviously need more but the two boxes I have are great quality for a good price. I got both studio boxes on sale for a little over $120 total.

She's still alive...

But on the wider point yes, but we're still at her golden phase. I hope it is seen through because she did some great stuff in the 90s and 00s that has never been on vinyl

I think all indications are they will see this through her entire career. And it could just be my own rationalizations, but I think the separate Archives box sets have gotten stronger from 1 to 3, and I suspect there will be a lot more to come beyond the albums as we know them.

Estate has a really specific meaning though lol.

Herself and Bernie with Rhino are doing a really good job so far!
i'm running on 4 hours of sleep :)

i wasn't sure how involved Joni herself has been in the process. but yea--i love the first two boxes. the breakouts are quite affordable here too. They seem to all be around $20-25 so far.

I think @Russ I is right--seems they are the path to get to everything from her catalogue. And I'd rather have her/Bernie/Rhino do it right now than only a company like MoFi doing just one steps. Would be nice if they do regular MoFi 33s later but I've been more than happy with the box sets her and her team have done so far.

Book them National tickets! You’ll thank me later 😉

We should see Hejira, Don Juan, Mingus & Shadow and Light in the next box. Box 4 is the getten 4 which is her weakest period and then after that we are into some really underrated 90s albums, some really gems in there.

I agree that as a career overview it’s best done by her and her people but she’s big enough and good enough that everyone should be able to get stuck in at all levels. It baffled me how out of print an album as good as For The Roses was until last year. Until the box and break out it had never been repressed on vinyl since release!

luckily the lack of sleep is because i was at a concert last night, not because the little guy was not sleeping!

Well I'm not sure that you can really call any Stooges album "audiophile" but after a KPG vs RKS Raw Power shootout I gotta say, RKS absolutely nailed it. It's the usual difference between these two, KPG with max detail and RKS with rounded corners but unlike what I usually find between these two RKS also has a bigger stage, more extension on the instruments and more separation, somehow he's actually gotten a little air between this brick of a recording. Really really impressed with how this one turned out. It's got a tiny bit less bite but that is far outweighed by all the pros, it's a keeper.
