Party up moodge, it’s the June 2023 Vinyl Challenge!!

Day 22
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-haired Men - founded by David in 1964 as a joke to get some publicity.
Play something long or hairy or both
1000004479.jpg
Galt MacDermont's First Natural Hair Band "Ripped Open by Metal (Edit) b/w Let The Sunshine In (Previously Unreleased)" - Covers the Hairy part! Not long, it's a 45 and an edited version of the song but still a nice little banger!
I think my daughter has claimed my 45 adapter as her own so I'll need to find a boring replacement so it stays mine and not hers!

Day 23
Teenage Wildlife from Scary Monsters was seen as a put down of the many Bowie wannabies and “new wave boys.” But it is also directed to a younger self or younger sibling.
Play something that a “younger” version of you would be surprised by
1000004480.jpg
The Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" - I think the younger me would be surprised I listened to anything with guitars on it and imagine listening to your parents music? Oh hell no!! Then of course I had a "Beatles phase" and all that changed, turns out if you make good music I'll enjoy listening to it...even if it's for old folks, LIKE ME!!!

Day 24
Under Pressure. Pressure makes diamonds (according to Wikipedia).
Play something hard

Artifacts "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" - Wrong Side of da Tracks brought me to this album and the rest of it kept this tape in heavy rotation for a long ass time!
Love all the hot cassette action this month

Day 30
Ziggy Stardust “retired” on July 3rd 1973 (damn so close to June 30), famously captured by documentarian D.A. Pennebaker.
Play an artist who is somehow connected to a documentary.

The wonderful Merry Clayton, featured in one of my favorite docs - 20 Feet from Stardom

That isolated vocal track still gives me goosebumps

Love all the hot cassette action this month

I feel much more comfortable letting my 2 1/2 year old discover music via cassette where I can be hands off vs records which I'm constantly hovering over her waiting for disaster to strike!

If only she'd stop gravitating towards the most inappropriate ones but I guess it's like father like daughter!

Day 25
June 25, 2004 - Last performance of the Reality tour and last full Bowie concert ever, retiring completely from live performing in 2006.
Play something that is “last”
1000004496.jpg
Wolf Parade "Expo 86" - This is the last Wolf Parade album they released before breaking up! It was such a sad day when I heard the news, the silver lining was I got to see them just before they played their final shows! It was a COLD night and it didn't help that they were playing at a club called The Docks which was located beside Lake Ontario and it was so damn windy!! It was cut right through you wind, I almost remember that more than the show! The show was outstanding that night even if it was one of their last...what? They didn't break up? They took a "break"? An EP and 2 albums?!?! I did what? I went to the reunion show? I loved the EP and both those albums??? No that never happened!!!

Day 26
Velvet Underground - David received a promo copy of the first VU album in 1966 and quickly added “I’m Waiting for the Man” to his live repertoire, even recording it as an unreleased single. This and later “White Light/White Heat” were played at least once over every subsequent tour until 2004.
Play a cover
1000004497.jpg
Snoop Doggy Dogg "Doggystyle" - it's really rare for rappers to do a cover of another rappers song but if anyone was going to do it and pull it off its Snoop! Lodi Dodi is a cover of the Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh CLASSIC La-Di-Da-Di...it's funny because in the original Rick talks about crab rappers biting his rhymes and years later Snoop not only "borrowed" some of his style from Rick but he also covered probably his most famous track...and yes I'm determined to finish this month!

Day 27
Warren Peace (War and Peace) was the stage name of Geoff MacCormack, a long time friend of David’s and collaborator with him in the 70s.
Play a pun or a literary allusion
1000004498.jpg
Beastie Boys "An Exciting Evening at Home with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego" -
thanks Google:
This is an allusion to the Bible from the book of Daniel (Old Testament). Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were the three young Jews from the kingdom of Judah recorded in the Book of Daniel. The Beastie compares themselves to these three. They have also a message of hope regarding ‘man upstairs’
I love the Beastie Boys!
