Party up moodge, it’s the June 2023 Vinyl Challenge!!

Day 23
Teenage Wildlife from Scary Monsters was seen as a put down of the many Bowie wannabies and “new wave boys.” But it is also directed to a younger self or younger sibling.
Play something that a “younger” version of you would be surprised by.

Man, Scary Monsters is so good - a Top 3 Bowie album for me. Bravo for giving it some love.

I grew up on 70s Bowie. I was 19 when Scary Monsters was released. It was out there in the best possible way.

'It's No Game Pt. 1" is caustic bliss...

Day 14
Mime - Bowie was hired to go on tour with T-Rex as their opening act. As a mime.
Play a not so great career choice

UMC's "Unleashed" - where do I start? The UMC's put out the album Fruits of Nature and it went over really well, had a couple of singles that got airplay on mix shows and had at least 2 videos in heavy rotation on the Canadian RapCity! Sure one was called "Blue Cheese" and features a blue cheese monster that chases them around the world but the song was fun, not Fresh Prince corny but more lighthearted Native Tongue vibes! Then they released their follow up, and they went "hardcore"...like what the fuck? No one bought it, they said that the first record wasn't them and this was the REAL UMC's well guess what, no one wanted the REAL UMC's and this went wood! I recall Kool Kim going solo but trying to do a DOOM type thing where he released a song with no information under a fake name and wanted the "music to speak for itself" and that didn't go anywhere either! What could have been!

The editing is terrible but you get the idea!

Still a banger!

Day 22
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-haired Men - founded by David in 1964 as a joke to get some publicity.
Play something long or hairy or both

Michael Kiwanuka "Kiwanuka" (2019 Polydor)
The drawing of Michael on the cover has a pretty good head of hair and beard going. Even better than Mike from In Groove.

Mrs ImTheOcean likes to remind me that when I was in college I would put down her music for relying too much on synthesizers. Flash forward a lot of years, and find myself regretting that phase. Albums like this have certainly helped change my perspective.

As Sheriff – Six Ways To The Ace

These guys were pretty hairy when they were bringing their folk/blues psych-rock to the people of Victoria and Vancouver...
(There are even hairier photos in the included booklet!)

The guy with the uke seems to be doing the ‘freedom rock’ howl so I will say yes this is sufficiently hairy

It's a super cool archival project that just came out earlier this month - put together by the guy who also put together the release I'll be playing for today's prompt as well. A lot of what he's done so far is on the much heavier side of things, but when I saw "West Coast Folk/Blues Psych Rock" in an article the day this was being released, I figured it was most likely right up my alley - and a very cool piece of local history!

[edit:] Jason runs a shop here in town, also called Supreme Echo, that I don't get to nearly enough due to his hours, but it's where I picked up my Canadian OG pressing of On The Corner by Miles Davis back in the early pandemic days. He's good people doing good things. He said putting this particular release together took him 22 years...

The Nostrils – Undaunted

Never in a million years did younger me think I'd wind up having a friend whose dad was in a hardcore punk band, let alone one that was so formative to its local (Winnipeg) scene. This mega-long 7" EP was put together recently by Supreme Echo and my friend picked up copies to gift to a few of us.

The Nostrils also feature prominently in this book I read very recently:

My friend's dad was, and still is a badass!

I have a friend I met at my daughters elementary school a few years ago who I later found out was in Saetia, and I went to see one of their reunion shows recently. Not being familiar with them at all, it was pretty cool to see the crowds response to him!

Even though I came up with this prompt, I had no idea what I would do for it. I always tried to expand my musical horizons when I younger. There was lots of stuff that I tried to get into (Dylan, The Dead) that took me a while. Probably the hardest was Jazz. I just didn't understand it, and still don't probably, but about 4 years ago that started to change. It was partly because of the VMP Blue Note Anthology and also just reading posts on this board. Hope younger me is happy I didn't give up. Here is one of my favourites from that box set

John Coltrane - Coltrane’s Sound
IMG_3960.jpeg

Despite my undying devotion to all things Dave Matthews Band my love of LeRoi Moore’s silky saxophone runs didn’t translate to an appreciation of Jazz music. Instrumental music that stretched longer than three minutes was pretty intolerable to be at the time. Nowadays I have over a hundred Jazz albums including this one that just arrived today.

Day 15
Nadsat. A fictional slang language Anthony Burgess created for his novel A Clockwork Orange. Bowie made use of these words throughout his career, especially in Girl Loves Me
Play something with made up or unintelligible lyrics or vocals

Das EFX "Dead Serious" - ok so it's not exactly a made up language but for an all too brief moment their, let's call it unique, style was all the rage in rap music! It was silly enough when they did it but the imitators were so much worse and not surprisingly even they tried to move on from it! This album is still great to me, long live diggity Das EFX

Nice little James Brown sample on this one!
