Be sure to read the first paragraph by @scotthilk in the second post. It's truth.
Ok, so that pretty much sums up every emotion I have about this record. Listening to it in full today for the first times in years only reinforce my belief that this is one of the cornerstones of rock n' roll. A masterpiece. 5 stars doesn't really feel enough, just considering I got chills and nearly cried when "Never Understand" kicked into gear. One of those songs that I leaned on during my late teens and that just made me feel alive.

I first discovered this album when I was 19 and had driven out to live in Portland for a year. I was broke and hitting up Bearshare to get all my music. This one still packs the same punch in my ears. 5/5

I only just listened to this for the first time recently thanks to @Yer Ol' Uncle D and his Vinyl Me, D selections. Glad I did because it's great stuff and I can see where all the love for it comes from, and the influence it has had on others. I wouldn't say it's quite all the way a 5 for me (YET), but close enough to join yall on the site rankings. 4.5 round up.

Already enjoyed it more this time than the first and I imagine that trend will continue over the next couple/few listens.

This is a prime example of when you heard the album can really affect your rating.

A friend had the first 2 or 3 singles that were released before the album. Hearing them in 1985 was totally unlike anything I had heard before and I had been listening to hardcore punk for a few years already. There was just nothing like the gut punch of hearing Never Understand back in ‘85.

But now, if you heard the album for the first time it would hit you hard I think but not in the same way as that controlled feedback is so so common.

Can't Buy A Thrill

I do love Steely Dan. I grew up in LA in the 70's & 80's so it seems like most of the songs raise some sort of memory or another. That being said, I do find that most of their albums have some great songs, but filler - except maybe for Aja. Can't Buy A Thrill is no exception, I'll give it a 3/5.

And I wish I had seen them when Walter was alive. Saw the tour last year, and it was not good. At all.

I heard for the first time in '92, on the heels of Nevermind and starting to discover alternative music. It sounded like nothing I had heard then too, and it still holds up in that respect, in my opinion. (I can only imagine how it must have felt to hear this in 85!)

Many have tried, but no one has topped this.

I’ve never listened to Darklands. I was pretty into Automatic when it came out. I had not heard Psychocandy until a couple years ago and on vinyl for the first time listening (yes @Yer Ol' Uncle D your recs are that powerful). Anyhow, I’ve never heard anything like it before or since.
