I love this band and love this album, Rated R and Songs for the Deaf are miles better, but this is that melodic heavy music all the same.
 
This was yesterday's and I wasn't able to finish it until this morning. I'd heard some of their later stuff before, but never this first album, which I strongly prefer. Great debut album. Very strong coming out in '81. Surprised this isn't more popular, but the semi experimental nature of it probably prevented it from going as mainstream as others in the genre. But I love that side of it. 4/5

I wanted to like this one based on the description, but I found myself wanting it to end from the first track. Don't know if it's just my mood today or what, but right now this is a 1/5 for me. I suspect there are going to be several on here who really like it and hopefully it'll click more when it comes up in the other thread and I relisten.

I've been meaning to give The National another shot for a while now, so this worked out nicely in that regard. Unfortunately, I still don't get why they seem so beloved. Fine enough stuff, but it never really grabbed me at all. "Runaway" seemed vaguely familiar and would be the closest I had to a favourite song on here. Otherwise it felt pretty unremarkable. 2.75/5

The National are one of my faves. They are brooding and darkly romantic lyrically, while making elegant guitar rock. For me, they are up there with Spoon & My Morning Jacket as one of the most consistently brilliant American bands over the the past 20 years. I will probably get flayed for this but for me The National (with maybe the exception of Wilco) are the closet thing America has to Radiohead.

All of this to say none of that will necessarily help The National click for you or understand the hype. I feel like with many artists it a bit of the music hitting you at the right moment in your life for it to speak to you. For me, it feels like I grew up with the band and with each subsequent album they have been almost tailored made for where I am in my life.

While I love High Violet I would say it’s probably my 4th or 5th favorite National album, Though “Bloodbuzz Ohio” and “Terrible Love” are two of my absolute favorite tracks. I don’t know if this will do anything for ya but The National released an alternate version of “Terrible Love” (that I prefer).

First time listening to a Crowded House album - I remember them having a video that got somewhat regular play on MuchMusic in the first half of the 90s but I can't for the life of me remember what the song was. Otherwise, they were mostly on my radar due to the Finns and Eddie Vedder doing a bunch of stuff together. That all said, I was shocked right out the gate with "Chocolate Cake" as I distinctly remember the song but haven't heard it in damn near thirty years and don't know that I ever realized at all that it was Crowded House! Way cool. Definitely my favourite song on here. My first listen didn't blow me away by any means, but definitely opened an invitation to further listening - I enjoyed it enough that I want to hear it again and perhaps dig a little deeper into their catalogue. 3.5/5, round down (for now)

First, the label's inversion of the artwork was and always will be bullshit. This is not just the proper cover but the better cover. And a better indication of what you're about to get. Which is absolute madcap genius and blazing satire. This is my absolute favourite Zappa album, easy. Brilliant takedowns of hippies, right-wingers and the LAPD. There is a lot going on throughout and some of the transitions and oddities will likely drive many folks a bit bonkers, but I think it just makes the whole thing all the more brilliant. A very enthusiastic 5/5

I'm gonna mostly chalk this up to I'm listening to it right after the ELP thing in the other thread and generally work putting me in a foul mood, but this is not doing it for me right now. Baroque Byrds is not what I was expecting nor what I want (right now at least). 2 stars.
