Seems like a really good reflection of where I would have guessed this board falling on ranking releases, both Black Pumas and The Comet Is Coming have been discussed extensively and have widespread admiration here (both would be in my top 25 of the year, but didn't make the top 10).

Thanks for your hard work!

I’ve got three in the top ten on vinyl... Olsen, Comet is Coming and Black Pumas. Little Simz made my top twenty. I recently just started checking out Lana Del Rey’s new album (she’s just kind of not struck me in the past, but a song made the best of mixtape on Sound Opinions and it struck my fancy...). The rest of the list is certainly worthy. It was a great year for music.

Thanks again @Woob_woob for doing this!

Kishi in top 20. This is how I know this forum is my place.

Also, so dope that Black Pumas is the #1 album here. I didn't have their album in my top 10 albums, but Colors is my favorite song of 2019.

Black Pumas at #1 and The Comet Is Coming at #2!!! 😱😍🙉🌈🔥🌟🥂💯💎🎉👌

I am so happy I got the VMP exclusives for both those releases as well!!! 🙏🤗🕺💃

Also, Thank goodness I changed my list and gave Little Simz 15 points! I’m so happy she made it into the top 10! 🙌🎊👸

And I’m also very happy that Weyes Blood JUST bet Lana Del Rey! 😅😇☕

Tyler, The Creator at #14 and Freddie Gibbs and Madlib at #12 is also noiiiiiice! 🦓🎀

Just think how much higher Charli XCX could be if you’d just believed 😜

I’m happy with Charli XCX coming in at #55! It’s a great album! A magnificent record really! But so was Caroline Polachek’s “Pang”, and that came in at #61! 🤷‍♂️😅

If there is one album I think that should’ve placed much higher on the list, it would be Stella Donnelly’s “Beware Of The Dogs”! 🐶

But here’s the real question! How did Maggie Rogers beat Charli XCX?!?! That’s what you need to be asking yourself my friend! 😉

I know, I know, it’s devastating, I too feel the heartbreak after realising that......😢💔

I have a mental block with considering any contemporary funk/soul as pastiche, but Black Pumas got a ton of play on the radio station I listen to and started to crack that a little. Maybe they'll be one of those bands I look back on in a few years and reconsider.

Threw the top 99 in a Spotify playlist if anyone is interested, good for a random hit - Needles & Grooves Top Albums of 2019
Thank you for this! I'm discovering new-to-me stuff all over this.

It is wild to put on random. Tyler Childers to Danny Brown to King Princess to billie eilish to (Sandy) Alex G just gave me whiplash. Lol And then I giggle everytime Carly Slay pops up.

We have eclectic and diverse taste here in N&G. Great job all!!!

Ok... after multiple drafts and going back and revisiting some albums (and listening to one new one that dropped a bomb on my list at the last second) I think I finally put together a top 15 that accurately sums up my year. Spreading the points across the list in a way that reflects my feelings accurately was a pain but I think I managed it. I'm happy with this list at the moment, although it won't be long until I start debating with myself the positioning of certain albums over others. But if I don't post it now I'll never stop tinkering with it... so for now consider this Gap's 15 favorite albums of 2019!
  1. 100 gecs - 1000 gecs (15 pts)
  2. Hannah Diamond - Reflections (10 pts)
  3. Charli XCX - Charli (9 pts)
  4. Stella Donnelly - Beware of the Dogs (8 pts)
  5. Danny Brown - ¿uknowhatimsayin? (8 pts)
  6. Xiu Xiu - Girl With Basket of Fruit (8 pts)
  7. Kevin Abstract - ARIZONA BABY (7 pts)
  8. James Blake - Assume Form (6 pts)
  9. Cherry Glazerr - Stuffed & Ready (6 pts)
  10. Kim Petras - Clarity (6 pts)
  11. Tyler, the Creator - IGOR (5 pts)
  12. Labrinth, Sia & Diplo - LSD (4 pts)

  15. Little Simz - GREY Area (2 pts)
So... huh. Revisiting this list over three years later is interesting. For one, I'd try to keep it to a tidy top 10 now, but I also feel like my relationship with a lot of these albums has changed over the years.

1000 gecs - I went all in on gecs in 2019, and I don't doubt that I felt this was truly was the best album of the year then. Now, though... I still love it, but I've heard it copied so much it doesn't sound quite as revolutionary to my ears as it did when it was new.

Reflections - Now this one I don't know what the fuck I was thinking. Number 2? I mean it's good but I think the reason it landed so high is that it had just come out when I was making my list so it had recency bias going for it. It probably wouldn't even be on my list if I made it now tbh.

Charli - I liked this one quite a bit, then how i'm feeling now came out and did basically everything this album was trying to do better, so I haven't really returned this one in full in a long time. I definitely wouldn't have it at number 3 now.

Beware of the Dogs - I'd probably put this one a bit lower but I still really enjoy it and stand by it's place on this list. It's a shame I didn't care much for the follow-up she put out last year.

¿uknowhatimsayin? - This is by far the best album on this list and I don't know why I didn't see that back when I made it. This would be my number 1 if I made this list now, no questions.

Girl With Basket of Fruit - No issues with this one being here.

ARIZONA BABY - So the whole Brockhampton thing really fizzled out but I still really love this album. I preferred it to any full length BH project now that I think about it. Haven't given it a full listen in a bit but it would probably still make my list.

Assume Form - This album helped me get over a break-up so I'll always have some admiration for it but I feel like I might struggle to sit through it from beginning to end these days. Might need to revisit it to see if it actually holds up or if I was just the right amount of emotionally vulnerable enough when it first came out.

Stuffed & Ready - This album rocked! This maybe should have been a bit higher. Haven't actually sat down with it from beginning to end in a bit though, need to rectify that. Where is that new album, Ms. Creevy?

Clarity - Ha! I actually still like quite a bit of this one despite not really caring for the direction she's gone since, but I don't think it would be on my list now.

IGOR - I criminally underrated this one. I actually preferred Call Me If You Get Lost as a whole, but in hindsight I enjoyed this more than Flower Boy.

LSD - Oh, wow, I haven't thought of this one in a while. I remember it landing on my list based almost entirely on the strength of a few choice cuts, but I'd say the album as a whole might be a bit shaky on a revisit.

There Existed an Addiction to Blood - This deserved to be way higher.

Injury Reserve - I feel terrible saying this but I haven't really had the heart to go back to Injury Reserve since Groggs died. I haven't returned to this one and I think I might have even skipped their last one... it's probably time to try and rectify that because I remember this being really, really good.

GREY Area - Why did I underrate all the hip-hop releases this year??? I guess too much PC Music was rotting my ears. Anyways this album fucking rules and should have been higher.

Also several albums I snubbed: Dedicated by Carly Rae Jepsen (leaving this off the list was egregious on my part), Jaime by Brittany Howard, ANIMA by Thom Yorke, Schlagenheim by black midi, when we all fall asleep... by Billie Eilish, Social Cues by Cage the Elephant, and probably a lot more I'm not thinking of.

I guess the point of this post is that it's funny how much tastes can change!

I really enjoy going back and looking at my favorites lists from the past too, helps me get a better understanding of what I love in music. I think if I re-did this one based on what I've listened to the most a few albums would fall off and a few would probably get the full 20 points.

Kevin Abstract - Arizona Baby - 10

re-done:
Kevin Abstract - Arizona Baby - 20 (I listen to this album all the time, it's my favorite BH related project by far.)
Mereba - The Jungle is the Only Way Out - 20 (This would be my biggest jump, I love this album front to back and play Sandstorm regularly.)
Emily King- Scenery - 10 (one of my favorite vocalists, what a instrument)
James Blake - Assume Form - 10 (probably not a popular opinion, but this is still my favorite album from James Blake. One of my favorite albums to put on for a walk.)
Sasha Sloan - Self Portrait - 10 (This might be an EP technically but it's a great collection of songs regardless.)
Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? - 10 (Her best album and what I listen to when I'm in a Billie mood)
Tyler The Creator - IGOR - 10 (his best album for me, and it's not close.)
Little Simz - Grey Area - 5 (Simz might be the most consistent rapper, every album is excellent. Only reason this wouldn't get more points is if I'm re-visiting Simz this wouldn't be the first album I go to.)
Michael Kiwanuka - Kiwanuka - 5 (fantastic album, another voice I adore.)

I still like all the albums from my OG list but, looking at them again with hindsight, it's a single or a few tracks that made me rate the album so high.

2019 was a killer year for rap.

I also underrated Igor. Though I would still have Flowerboy ahead of it, I'd say all three of his recent albums are masterpieces.

And Grey Area was high on my list at the time and still remains a regular listen. In fact, I think I prefer it to Sometimes just because that one I have to be in a mood for.

Meanwhile, Bandana remains my favorite Freddie album and JPEG's Cornballs is probably my favorite hip-hop album of the past 5 years. I was on a hiatus from buying vinyl that year and would kill for re-issues of both.
