Hooptober challenge rules are up on Letterboxd! Currently building my list in private mode, but will share when it's ready. The watchathon begins September 15!

Anyone else partaking? This will be my third year.

If I try it I’d have to start soon; I’m just not a movie-a-day guy no more.

I.challenge you to trade one of the films in this list for We're All Going to the World's Fair 👀

That's the challenge creator/host's list which lists all the rules/criteria. We saw World's Fair recently and loved it! Coming to HBO Max on Sep. 1.

(I'm like 95% done with my list and will post maybe tomorrow.)

Just a heads up for all of us Horror fans...

I'm gonna try to get the new Halloween thread going on September 1st this year - so it will essentially be a full 61 days of Halloween thread.

Just giving a week or so notice if you want to get your watch list going.

Here's what I've set myself up for with HoopTober. This'll likely be my jumping off point for the 61 Days of Halloween thread, which I'll probably fill in with more mainstream franchise blindspots.

My movie theater didn’t die!! They are participating in the Studio Ghibli Fest 2022. We watched Only Yesterday which was a beautiful movie. I really enjoyed it because it was a very subtle, quiet movie. I really enjoyed the breathing room the film gave you to just enjoy it visually. Next month they are playing Howls Flying Castle so we are going next month for that one.

I'd love to see some of those on the big screen. Never had the chance. I didn't realize they did that sort of thing so I'm gonna have to check and see if anywhere near me is participating.

One local theater here in Sacramento is showing one Ghibli film a week for the whole summer, every Wednesday night. We've been able to see a couple so far.

Only Yesterday is a top 3 Ghibli film for me. The ending always wrecks me.

looks like they're showing them here too. might need to catch some too. I watched spirited away last time they did showings a few years back.

The ending made me tear up some but I couldn’t let myself get too overcome because I had kids with me. This was the first time I had seen Only Yesterday and it’s definitely up there as a potential new favorite. It’s such a sweet and lovely film.

They are showing one film a month and Spirited Away is at the end of October. I really want to see that one on the big screen.

Watched Nope tonight and absolutely loved it until about the last five minutes, which I felt were uninspired and unworthy of the excellent ode to classic sci-fi film that Peele created.

If it weren't for that it would be my favorite of his films because I love this take on the genre, not because it's his best, because from a plot standpoint and overall acting standpoint it's objectively not. But from a cinematography and audio standpoint he's grown in great ways. It borrowed shots from landscape films, paid homage to scenes from classic films, and he doesn't overdo it on the special effects, using them only enough to be effective in setting the mood. But he sacrificed some character and relationship development, and if we follow Tobias Wolfe's ideas for stories, he doesn't do enough to establish the links in the chain that exist before and after the story in the viewer's mind. And this is necessary so that we can keep telling the story in our own minds once what is given to us is done. It's what gives a story life beyond what the author provides. But Nope starts and it ends, and it could have been more for the viewer without it being more for the film with a few different choices or additions in the dialog.

Despite these flaws, he's one of the most original and exciting filmmakers today. He takes risks and is creating a lineage of films that are worthy of study by aspiring film makers. I could easily design a course on his work so far, and I'm sure it will only get richer as he continues to create.

There’s pretty obviously a big ol’ director’s cut in the wings somewhere, and I am there for it.

Enjoyed Nope today as well. Felt a bit long, but lots to analyze. You can tell Jordan Peele had a lot of fun making this one. A loving ode and critique wrapped in one. Plenty of symbolism too, and he doesn't over-explain it. Going to be chewing on it for a while.
