Jazz

I haven't been keeping up on here for the past few days as I have been away so maybe it's been shared already, but I got an email this morning from In+Out Records announcing a 2LP Live Sun Ra album signed by Marshall Allen.

These IN+Out releases are of fantastic quality (the ones I have are all great anyway).

@avecigrec @Jan @from_my_stacks @Dtknuckles..... you guys might all be interested in this.

Oh fuck yeah! I wondered if this would ever get a vinyl release!

I have done this for a couple of years running now and it helps me work out what I actually do want to go for. So, here are some jazz RSD releases that caught my attention:

Albert Ayler - Revelations
- This is a set which I think will be great and I would love to spend the afternoon digging into it. However, 2 shops near me have it listed for £170 and £195 which is way more than I'm comfortable paying. It might be a 5lp set but that's a heck of a lot of money. Ayler's music is really interesting and I have a few of his records that I enjoy (In Greenwich Village, My Name Is Albert Ayler, Something Different!, New Grass) but honestly, I think I would really have to be in a certain mood to fully appreciate a 5lp set. Maybe if I can get it at a later time cheaper I will, but I'm in no rush.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - In My Prime
- Seems like a Blakey release is a go-to now for the RSD event. This one looks to be a reissue that combines 2 separate volume releases into a single package. Worth noting that these original pressings can be bought for less than £10 each. Again, this is going to be a pass for me I think.

Bill Evans - Morning Glory: The 1973 Concert at the Teatro Gran Rex, Buenos Aires
Bill Evans - Inner Spirit: The 1979 Concert at the Teatro General San Martín, Buenos Aires
- Resonance is back at it again with a couple more Bill Evans releases. I have to say that I really enjoy these Resonance Releases, despite the fact that some people have been unhappy with the audio quality of some of them. I know Evans sells really well but I do wish they would focus on other musicians a bit more, they must have access to a wealth of tapes. I think I have 5 of their Evans' releases now and I'm wondering if these would actually add much more to what I already have available.

Bobby Hamilton Quintet Unlimited - Dream Queen
- This is something that I wasn't expecting. I have been hoping to get the Superfly Records reissue for a while now but it's one of the more pricey ones to find on the secondary market (over £100). Now-Again is the ones responsible for this reissue. I will be after this I think, depending on the price.

Charles Mingus - The Lost Album from Ronnie Scott's
- Another release from Resonance. I'm really intrigued by this one and will likely try to get a copy, but £70 - £80 is going to be a bitter pill to swallow.

Chet Baker - Live In Paris: The Radio France Recordings 1983-1984
- This is another that is sure to be a big seller. Its something that I would certainly be interested in but, as is the running theme this year, its price is too hard to justify. £90 - £105 from the 2 shops I have looked at. Even if it is a 3lp set this is too much for me to justify.

Freddie Hubbard - Music Is Here: Live At Maison de la Radio (ORFT) Paris 1973
- This is another live Paris recording. Tapes from the ORFT archives seem to be a great place to dig into as there have been several RSD releases in the past that make use of them (Resonance have used them quite a bit). Personally, I will skip this one. I cant see it selling out and it's already been delayed until June.

Miles Davis - Live In Montreal, 7th July, 1983
I hadn't heard anything about this until I came across it on the RSD list. Looks to be Miles with one of the later iterations of his group.

Freddie Redd - Music From The Connection
- I won't be getting this as I'm fortunate enough to have a first mono pressing signed by Freddie as well as the Mosaic Complete Blue Note Recordings Of Freddie Redd, BUT it's one of my favourites and well worth listening to. The film is superb as well. I have not heard of the label that is releasing this pressing (Ikon) so I can't comment on that.

Max Roach - We Insist!
- This is another reissue. I'm a bit confused by the description actually as it's 2LP's (the original is 1) and it says it's the first time it has been reissued since the 1970's, which just isn't true. I'm going to steer clear.

Jonny Trunk - AZ of Record Shop Bags: 1940s to 1990s
- This is a fun oddity that I thought I would throw in the mix. Johnny Trunk is pretty well known over here in the UK for releasing some fantastic British jazz reissues. This looks to be a fantastic coffee table book which I'm sure a lot of the more seasoned Brits will particularly enjoy as I imagine most of the shops will have closed now.

Always appreciate this guidance, @Selaws!

No worries! It's all just my opinion on each one though so I might be wrong in some cases. I'm just looking forward to seeing what everyone gets and what the highlights turn out to be.
My take!!

Albert Ayler - Revelations

These are late period Ayler recordings which have been issued before in various configuration in good, not great, sound. The thing here is it is late period Ayler without the studio commercializations. Pretty wild, so I am all over this one.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - In My Prime

Thing is -it wasn't his prime. Pointless reissue that would be ignored outside RSD. Pass.

Bill Evans - Morning Glory: The 1973 Concert at the Teatro Gran Rex, Buenos Aires
Bill Evans - Inner Spirit: The 1979 Concert at the Teatro General San Martín, Buenos Aires

Resonance have become the label of recordings that would be trashed outside RSD, at excessive prices. Zev, the self-styled jazz detective, is really just calling around to find anything resembling a tape. Want late period Evans? Get the Japanese reissue Tokyo record. I will wait until I get a digital copy and then decide, but unless they have found exceptional tapes, the price makes it unjustifiable.

Bobby Hamilton Quintet Unlimited - Dream Queen

Way more interesting. A definite.

Charles Mingus - The Lost Album from Ronnie Scott's

Given that it is Resonance, it is overpriced - but the lineup is interesting, and it was recorded 8 track (I am guessing by Columbia) so I am probably all over it.

Chet Baker - Live In Paris: The Radio France Recordings 1983-1984

I'm not a big Chet fan, but the toothless Chet period - a bit of trumpet, some crooning, no drummer (probably couldn't find one) - no, not my thing. And this much of it IMO is too much of a not so good thing. But! It's mastered by Kevin Grey!! Well, kind of. Digital file, and pressed at the fabulous Memphis Pressing Plant, formerly known as United. I think I'll pass.

Freddie Hubbard - Music Is Here: Live At Maison de la Radio (ORFT) Paris 1973

ALL IN. CTI period Freddie - live? YES.

Miles Davis - Live In Montreal, 7th July, 1983

Comeback Miles, circa Star People. Before it got poppish and shady. This is great.

Freddie Redd - Music From The Connection

UK only, looks like a pretty shady pressing.

Max Roach - We Insist!

This has indeed been done by Pure Pleasure, and another that falls into the 'shady'category. I don't really like it very much, and the Coleman Hawkins name prominently featured on the cover is deceptive as he only plays on one track, but they needed his name to sell a challenging record. Anyways since I have the PP, redundant.

Pepper Adams - Live At The Room At The Top

The sleeping giant. Love Pepper. Love this. Essential.

Cheaper (but not cheap!) in Canada to order directly from In + Out, in case any other Canucks are interested in this.
Oops. Sorry. I spent years working for a German company, with my manager based in Amsterdam, and beyond my awareness from that experience, I generally try not to view the world through a strictly US lens. That’s why I say N America, but I apparently don’t know enough about shipping/customs for Canadians! (I’d add Mexico too if I thought there anyone from there was on N&G)

All good. Shipping is weird here - it's often cheaper to order something from Europe than even within Canada! But also, not always. And even shipping from Germany or the UK can have a pretty wide variance from shockingly cheap to prohibitively expensive. I very much appreciate your posting the American link - I had a pair of tabs open to see the final checkout cost on each in order to nab the cheaper option because the answer was never a given until then.

Probably just the Art Pepper Mono here, Although I may decide my present copy is fine after another listen too. I don't get to worked up for RSD tbh and try to stick to my want list.

Note to self, tx to @MikeH time to stream some Freddie Redd this weekend. Connection and Shades Of would be a great for TP or BNC.

The Connection is one of my favourite Blue Note's I think, which is funny because it's quite unlike a lot of Blue Notes.

Have you seen the film? Well worth watching, it's fantastic.

Here's a youtube link to the full thing. Its free but does have Spanish subs

Still haven’t gotten my Ornette Coleman box from UDiscover even though I pre ordered dec 27th

They keep telling me they are looking into it but never say when it will ship or why it hasn’t. I’ve ever said if I can’t get an answer to just refund me. But nothing

Anyone have the same issue with them? I’ve ordered plenty from them before and this is the first time I’ve had a real issue but for the last three weeks they just keep saying “sorry we are looking into this.” Normally I’d be more understanding but I keep getting the runaround/ this was a 230$ box set…
so still no response, and by next week this box will have been out for almost a month. In my 20 some odd years of ordering records, from a major store/distro I have never had this issue in terms of a big company just flat out ignoring me. Hell I have ordered from Udiscover many times (I even have the nirvana nevermind vinyl box pre ordered, I guess I am a "Diamond" member or something. ). I have been pretty understanding as I have worked is customer service and knowing supply chain issues etc.

does anyone have a direct contact or anything for uDiscover. I told them last week if i had no update by friday I want my money back/will report to my credit card company. Nothing from them obviously...

Like I said if this was some 30-50 dollar order or something i get it. or if they just told me "hey we actually don't have this in stock and are waiting on a re-press" totally would understand, but this is just unacceptable at this point

yes, Yes, YES

Freddie Hubbard - Trumpet.... Junior Cook - Tenor Sax, Flute.... George Cables - Electric Piano.... Kent Brinkley - Bass.... Michael Carvin - Drums.... .............................................................. Recorded - March 25, 1973 - ORTF TV Studio, Paris....

(and I'm actually kind of happy that it is pushed to June -- likely makes tracking down a copy less stressful assuming I can remember...)

I'm very intrigued by the Miles, but also okay with waiting for a wider release on that one. I'd love the Mingus but it'll be too rich for my blood. Especially if I'm after the Hasaan Ibn Ali 4LP set.
If the pattern of Miles RSD releases continues, there will be no wider release.
