Tbh I think it's crazy that you've only listened to your 3rd favourite album of the year 3 times but hey you do you boo. If I find an album I love I'll usually listen to it in full daily for weeks on end
I’m with you, American Love Call has gotten 14 spins and something like 50 listens overall.

There's not been much change in my list now we're at the halfway point. In no particular order:

James Blake 'Assume Form'
Toro y Moi 'Outer Peace'
Cinematic Orchestra 'To Believe'
Andrew Bird 'My Finest Work Yet'
The Tallest Man on Earth 'I Love You. It's a Fever Dream'
Kevin Abstract 'Arizona Baby'
Tyler, The Creator 'IGOR'
Vampire Weekend 'Father of the Bride'
Black Pumas 'Black Pumas'
Thom Yorke 'ANIMA'

I really enjoyed it, up there with Injury Reserve and Little Simz as some of my personal favorite hip-hop I've heard this year. Freddie's voice and Madlib's beats just match so well together and they're both going at it *hard*

Funny enough, we are in agreement with those same two albums being personal favorites for the year. Dammit, I gotta listen now and report back! ❤

UPDATE - BANDANA IS AMAZING!!!

1. Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Bandana
2. Black Midi - schlagenheim
3. The National - I Am Easy to Find
4. Otoboke Beaver - Itekoma Hits
5. American Football - American Football (3)
6. PUP - Morbid Stuff
7. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Fishing for Fishies
8. Xiu Xiu - Girl with Basket of Fruit
9. Aries - WELCOME HOME
10. Malibu Ken - Malibu Ken

First impression after one listen this morning of Bandana is that it's a more consistent/cohesive album than Pinata but lacks some of the peak punchier songs like Scarface or High. I might end up preferring it a little more but my first impressions aren't usually spot on. Definitely will be one of my favorite albums of the year though at this rate. When did Gibbs become one of my favorite current rappers?

3 great albums in a years time will do that. Plus he was constantly good before too
Yeah he wasn't on my radar before Pinata. I mostly checked it out because of the Madlib association. I enjoyed the album at the time but didn't think it would end up being one of my favorites of the decade. Then I just kept listening to that and his other stuff more and more. Now with Bandana, I've looked up and realized I've been listening to a lot of Gibbs ever since.

Yea partnering with Madlib was the best decision of his career. Hes always been a top tier rapper, but theres only so much of a market for his style of gangsta/drug rap. Madlib pushed his sound forward all while staying true to his original aesthetic. They go better together than I initially thought they would, even though I loved each individually before Pinata.

This new Tallest Man on Earth album is a grower. I didn’t care for it after a few listens, I thought it had no flow and the sequencing of songs didn’t make sense. However it’s starting to open up a little bit. This one is lacking some strong strummy melodies that he does so well, but it is a lovely listen. His sound has changed since “There’s No Leaving Now” where everything is produced well and polished. Maybe if he hadn’t produced the whole thing himself the songs would sound a little bit grander and bright. Having to work within the structure of a label or format isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes a big radio single is exactly what an album needs.

It’s a 7.5/10 leaning 8/10 for me right now, with potential to move up.
