Online Vinyl Deals

I think one was acquired from another. But both are owned by Universal. Does seem silly to have two separate companies…

the big differences that i know of are that udiscover carries cds, art, and other merchandise whereas thesoundofvinyl is only vinyl that carries some exclusive color pressings that are typically from the european market.

Soundofvinyl has a HUGE selection of vinyl compared to udiscover. ~9000 listings if I’m not mistaken. It’s a PITA to browse and takes some digging to find the less popular stuff, but it’s there.

(I’d suggest searching for “.” Using a period in the search bar will bring up every listing, and you can then narrow stuff down by price/genre/release type/etc.)

They DO also sell merchandise, but not much of it.

Ooh that’s a good tip. I was finding all sorts of stuff on SOV that I didn’t know they had when I looked in their last sale just by searching.

Target B2G1 is back and includes vinyl again.... Uh ohhh

Now the next question is whether we can still cancel 1-2 items after placing the order and still retain the discount (which would bring that Bowie box to around $240ish…).
i would be completely shocked if they don't allow you cancel orders. I also don't think they would have sorted their backend out to price things differently when you check out. The main reason why the trick works is that they just do 33% off whatever the cheapest album is in your cart. I imagine that we'd be able to see if the cancel trick works even before you check out.

Also keep in mind, UDiscover and SOV are likely having a 40% off sale at black friday, which would be cheaper than any sales at Target. So if there are titles that UDiscover or SOV has, you may want to price check them across both places.

I hope you’re right about the 33%. For some reason I don’t see the Bowie box listed at either SOV or UD.

I didn't mean specifically for Bowie...that probably won't be at UDiscover or SOV because I think both of those stores sell mostly Universal releases and Bowie isn't on Universal. Stuff like the Tone Poets though may end up being cheaper at UDiscover/SOV if they do 40% off.

UD/SOV can offer such huge discounts (and pretty much perennially have 25% off) because they are mostly selling their own releases. It was a big part of why the Nirvana 30th release got so heavily allocated to local stores. Instead of selling more copies wholesale to record shops, they just sold them direct to consumers at a little below MSRP. So even with 25% sales, they are making more money on those sales than selling wholesale to stores.

Agree, the thing is that Target is often listing items at a cheaper starting price (e.g. Katanga Tone Poet at $25 while UD has it at $34). I wonder how many open windows my phone’s browser can handle!

Yea--it's definitely a case by case basis. UD/SOV are almost always at list price. UD often has a great selection of Tone Poets though that aren't always at Target. It's kinda crazy to me to see all the albums that Target sells. How many people are buying the $1,000 uber box set version of All Things Must Pass from Target??

Realistically, "more than you actually will use" is the real answer. There is an upper limit, based on threads available to your processor and RAM available, but chrome (and, to a lesser extent firefox, because firefox is a piece of shit when handling memory leaks,) solves this by dumping the cache of whatever pages you're not actually using right at the moment.

Sorry, I know this is a tangent, but it's related to a thing I've been working on and so therefore it's kind of fresh in the mind.

I used the cancellation trick last week to order a few criterion blurays. The annoying thing though, is that they don’t subtract the sales tax amount when you do that - so even if you cancel two items, you’ll pay 3x sales tax for the third one.

EDIT: after you cancel it takes them a while to correct the sales tax amount, but they get it right by the time it ships.

Scrolling through vinyl at target raises questions:
Do we really need five variants of Megadeth - Night in Buenos Aries?
Does Todd Rundgren know someone at target?
What's up with Paper Jerry's eyes?

if i remember correctly when i do the cancellation trick i initially get charged the whole amount as a pending charge but once the item ships i get charged the discounted price with correct sales tax.
