August 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread: Summer Loving

29th August - "Own up, half your music is black,”

After Eric Clapton’s racist rant, Rock Against Racism was founded. Play an album with anti-racism themes or lyrics.

Stevie Wonder - “Hotter than July”

Probably most famous for “Happy Birthday”, a song which promoted the adoption of Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday as a national holiday before it’s official adoption in 1983.

Curtis Mayfield "Curtis" (1970 Curtom; 2021 Run Out Groove deluxe edition)
A classic with several anti-racism and empowerment tracks like "(Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Down Below We're All Gonna Go", "Move On Up", "Miss Black America" and "We People Who Are Darker Than Blue".

30th August - International Whale Shark Day!

I was lucky enough to swim with Whale Sharks a few years ago and it was an incredible experience. Choose an album that has a sea theme!

Stevie Wonder again… “Original Musiquarium I”

Yeah, it’s a bit of a stretch, but I’m going with it!

28th August - “I’m only here for the money.”

Miles Davis & John Coltrane - The Final Tour: Paris, March 21, 1960 (Columbia, 2019 VMP Classics pressing)

By 1960 John Coltrane was keen to leave Miles Davis' group in order to explore the more progressive side of jazz. After a lot of effort, Davis convinced him to stay on for a final tour of Europe which despite some issues between them, actually provided some stunning music.

I sold this yesterday.

I spun it twice in two years and couldn't be bothered to return to it. Not much a fan of live recordings on physical format overall.
It's fine, but not in need of a spot in limited shelf space.
Makes sense then, no point keeping records that dont take your fancy. Hope you got a decent price for it, looks to be going for a decent chunk.

26th August - Sounds As Good As It Looks.

Going for a two-fer... This arrived yesterday and the artwork is pretty cool. It's also the latest N&G ROTM.

Oasis split up on this day in 2009. Play the last album from a group before they broke up/changed line-up.

Hum - Inlet

This album was the band's triumphant return after about twenty years, and now it will be their last with drummer Bryan St. Pere, who passed away this year. His drumming was always a key element of their influential sound.

The Lightmen Plus One - Energy Control Center (Lightin' Records, 2018 VMP Classics pressing)

This was a VMP release that kind of flew under the radar but I love it. An incredible album that focuses on slavery. It actually opens with the sound of whips and ends with an incredibly catchy but harrowing vocal story of the plight of slaves.

Surfer Blood "Astro Coast" (2009 Kanine Records; RSD2020 reissue)
I've used this record for a similar theme in past challenges, but it really is the best I have for it. Sharks? Check. Ocean? Check. Swimming? check. Floating? Check. Surfing? Check. Bonus reference to jabronis? Check.

Lee Morgan – The Complete Live At The Lighthouse: Hermosa Beach, California (Blue Note, 2021 Limited Box Set)

Although it arrived pretty beat up and I will try and get a replacement, I figured there is no way that I cant play one of these today!

Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage

Herbie approached this album with the intent to evoke images of the sea. I’d say he nailed it.
