YEAR END MEGALIST 2020!!!

I mean isn’t there a bunch of unreleased stuff on it?

From the tapes from the sessions back then. If we had a “top reissues” I’m with you, it’s one of my favourite purchases this year, loved every minutes of it. I’d have said the same about The Beatles and Esher Sessions and the recent Prince reissues, for other examples.

I don’t think that a 94 album from a legacy artist deserves to take kudos and focus from current artists and works. That’s my view though. As I said we don’t tend to be hugely stringent with rules around here.
I think if it was just the unreleased stuff I'd consider it for this year, but instead it's being treated more like bonus material to the existing album, so not eligible.

Lido Pimienta though.......I guess it looks like you will list her which makes me want to list her too, but who else is going to list her!?!? Maybe @alspriet if he decides to participate in this, but apart from that...🤷‍♂️🙈
Nah, there are many albums that got a lot more plays. She'll be somewhere in my top 30, but I'll probably be giving 5 records 20 points, or 10 records 10 points or something like that

I gave Anna McClelland's I Saw First Light only 2 points on my best-of list because, well, it's tough to compete with the likes of Taylor Swift, Fiona Apple, Phoebe Bridgers, etc. But I'm really glad to have stumbled upon this album/artist I'd never heard of. And I can't stop listening to the first track from her record (link below). It's not every day you find this kind of bedroom-leaning indie pop with a reed instrument and a fucking string section in the mix!

Hoping to maybe turn someone on to an artist they haven't heard of, kind of a cross between Phoebe Bridgers and Snail Mail would be the best I can do to 'categorize' it.

15 - Caribou - Suddenly
15 - Honey Harper - Starmaker
10 - Greyhounds - Primates
10 - John Moreland - LP5
10 - Tame Impala - The Slow Rush
5 - Poolside - Low Season
5 - Andy Shauf - The Neon Skyline
5 - Delta Spirit - What Is There
5 - The 1975 - Notes On A Conditional Form
5 - Nathaniel Rateliff - And It’s Still Alright
5 - Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
5 - Eric Hilton - Infinite Everywhere
5 - Taylor Swift - folklore

So here is my take on 2020, hope you enjoy, I did!

17. Taylor Swift - Folklore
18. Matt Berninger - Serpentine Prison
19. Idles - Ultra Mono
20. Taylor Swift - Evermore

Honourable Mentions (In No Particular Order)

Les Amazones d’Afrique - Amazones Power
Tame Impala - The Slow Rush
Monophonics - It’s Only Us
Hilary Woods - Birthmarks
The Strokes - The New Abnormal
Fiona Apple - Fetch The Bolt Cutters
Angel Olsen - A Whole New Mess
Arctic Monkey - Royal Albert Hall

Disappointments

Thundercat - It Is What It Is

A bit too mannered for a Thundercat album for me, I hope he brings back the chaos next time

Sufjan Stevens - The Ascension
Bright Eyes - Down In The Weeds, Where The World Once Was

Both are a little long and a little one paced which sadly means that, although not bad, they are a bit boring.

Not Had A Chance To Listen To Properly Yet

McCartney - III
Kelly Lee Owens - Inner Song

Happy to see the JDB album on a list! My copy arrived at my house right after I left home for 4 months so I still haven't got a chance to listen to it.

This made me laugh

We can probably write something for the missing albums like

"Moses sumney - grae: somehow you got more extroverted during the pandemic, doesn't mean you are any less lonely or gay, but at least you are more energetic"

Laura Marling — Song For Our Daughter: You were a Gifted Kid until adulthood hit and you burned out, but you gradually found meaning on your own terms, it just took your entire 20s. Now you want kids, but you’re concerned about raising agoraphobic children in a post-pandemic world.

Are they stalking me? Other than the last line that’s freaky!

Had to change things up a bit, not because of the new Taylor album but because I’ve been spending more time with this new Sylvan Esso and it keeps getting better and better .

I'm facing the same problem this year especially after The Avalanches and T-Swift's second surprise album drop of 2020 threw a wrench into my compiled list 😕
I won't lie, the new Avalanches has kind of made me do a double take as well. I doubt it will make the cut since it's just too new for me to really put into context for the whole year, but it's definitely an honorable mention

The Avalanches has made the cut ✂️ for me and it's currently sitting in my top 20.
