The NBA Thread

Also I can't wait for the NBA draft. My fiancee is nowhere near as excited (she dreads the draft because of how utterly boring it is to her haha). But I'm also the crazy guy who watches it all the way through the end of the 2nd round.
Itll be different this year as I usually know a lot more of the players from watching the NCAA tourney

Agreed but I'm also just happy the Knicks have 3 picks in the 1st and early 2nd. And it'll be exciting just to see what a lot of teams do since after the top 2-3 there are lots of good options.

I love both Jrue and Bogdan, but at that price why not just take a shot for Harden?
Because Houston wants stars or young players. They aren't gonna trade Harden for Donte Divincenzo, two bad contracts and some picks haha. Even the Nets supposed offer is better than that.

Divincenzo + 3 first rd picks + picks swaps is better than any proposed package I've seen. I think George Hill's contract is actually very good and you could easily go ahead and flip him to a contender for value. Bledsoe not so much but it's at least moveable.

The rumored Nets package includes 2 FAs at the end of this year, one bad contract, and one pretty good player with a few more years of control.

The interesting thing is now I think the Pelicans can easily put the best trade together with some of the pieces they got from the AD and Jrue trades. Harden's 31 but it's not like his game relies heavily on elite athleticism. I could see him having 6 or so more years of elite play. It would be smart to get someone together with Zion while Zion's still cheap.

The thing with the Bucks picks + swaps is that if you trade Harden to Milwaukee, there's almost no way Giannis leaves. I'd already bet almost anything that he has a handshake agreement to re-sign. So do 3 very late 1sts and swaps hold much value? Or would you rather have some known quantities, even if they aren't stars? Obviously things could implode in Milwaukee, but with how bad the Rockets would be if they are only adding Dante/Hill/Bledsoe, those swaps are very unlikely to be worth much at all. Especially with Harden being on the books for a few years and Giannis likely resigning for 5 years.

I don't think the Nets supposed trade package is particularly impressive (Allen + Dinwiddie + LeVert + Prince + 1sts) but I'd rather have that than Dante and just picks. I know Dinwiddie has a player option, but he would be the starter and could likely get paid well by Houston to re-sign next year. LeVert is locked in and a gamble with his health but has promise. Allen is not a bad big man and could probably be had for cheap with his skillset.

I think the Sixers have the best potential package if Morey had the gall to put Simmons in, but A) I'm not sure that Fertitta wants to trade with Morey out of spite and B) I don't know that Morey would give up Simmons. Maybe if they can manage to dump Horford as well...

Pels making a play would be very very interesting too. I would disagree that Harden's game doesn't rely on athleticism though--he is sneaky athletic. He has a good first burst and his deceleration which is a HUGE part of his game requires elite athleticism. But I do wonder what you trade--would you sign and trade BI and other assets? I was under the impression that you can't sign and trade a player and then include more assets.

I'm not sure how much pull these guys have, but it sounds like Harden is only adamant to join up in Brooklyn. Giannis doesn't want to play with Harden anyways. Word is he wanted Westbrook, and he came to visit Milwaukee. After talks, Westbrook and his family didn't want to come here. Who knows whats all true though, but I think these superstars have a lot to say in where they want to go, and what they want. Also a good time for my favorite gif

Oh yea how could we forget about the whole Harden + Giannis beef hah. They would probably get over it but...

“I wish I could be 7 feet and run and just dunk...Like that takes no skill at all. I gotta actually learn how to play basketball and how to have skill.”

It was a good move for them. I feel bad for Rubio but CP is a great fit and hopefully it keeps Booker around with them.

I really wonder what happens with Harden. A package with Simmons as the headliner makes the most sense but I don’t see Fertitta wanting to trade with Morey since he’s a petulant child. The Nets can’t possibly have the best trade.

The Nets definitely don't have the best trade. But certain teams wont be intestered and I doubt their Trumpy owner will be willing to trade with Morey.

Really relieved the Nuggets didnt give up Bol + multiple firsts for a very good but not all-star level player. I saw how that went when the Nuggets traded for K-Mart during the Melo era.

Our GMs best skill is drafting. We would have been emptying the gun while our best players still have 4+ years under contract.

Haply for the Bucks if this leads to Giannas staying but cant help but wish they had kept Malcom so it didnt come to this.

Also, fuck Harden. I understand wanting out of Houston, but the fact that he demanded to go to Brooklyn and only Brooklyn is everything wrong with the NBA.

As my favorite Nuggets beat reporter likes to say-- by being a die hard fan of a small market team, I'm basically in an abusive relationship with the league.

Brogdon just didn't really seem to want to be there and have the role he had. And Jrue is an upgrade over Brogdon although Jrue + Brogdon backcourt would have been rad.

Harden wants to go to NY because Kyrie and KD are there. I don't think he cares much about being in NY specifically. We don't have good strip clubs.

Jrue is definitely better than Malcom. But as a one of the smallest market teams, Malcom + 3 firsts >>> Jrue. Especially considering he is four years younger.

Bogdon is a great signing though. Dude is a killer in the clutch and, like Malcom, a versitle offensive weapon. He will pair wondefully with Jrue.

Just not sure how the are gonna fill out the rest of their roster

I'd disagree that Brodgon and picks are better than Jrue in the context of A) getting Giannis to re-sign and B) trying to actually win a championship with Giannis. The late picks don't matter a ton. It's more important for a small market team to try to win it all while you have a generational player than it is to spin the wheels for a few more years and hope you get a draft pick that hits again in the late 1st.

You need cheap talent to fill out rotation players. Because your not in LA / NY where players sign on the cheap. And giving up an unprotected pick for 2027 is just crazy.

You do it if you have to, but you dont have to if you still have Malcom.

I think our differences in perspective boil down to the markets we grew up watching. Not having 1st round picks absolutely killed the Nuggeys during the Melo years.

And its not just about cheap talent. Its also about having trade ammunition if you need it two years from now.

The problem is Brogdon doesn't make them a contender. Jrue moves the needle more IMO. So it's a trade you have to make especially if Giannis has given you the signal that he will re-sign for 5 years.

just.....HOW. And for an expiring in Danny Green and a lightly protected pick next year? And they got TFerg, who i know is not very good...but still.

Expiring Danny Green's contract sounds like Tilman Fertitta's music...
I heard its a lightly protected 2025 1st and a 2nd tonight. I have nothing against Al, but im so happy that terrible contract is gone.
