Yeah I'm not so sure either. There was some stuff a few pages back about how Bush was actually a decent guy, and I"m not ready to go that far. But I will say that I believe Bush usually thought he was doing the right thing, even when it was a "tough decision" like torturing people. And I think that's a key distinction, believing you're doing the right thing vs. knowing you're doing the wrong thing. That's why Cheney hasn't enjoyed the same reappraisal, and why Nixon's image never made a comeback. There's a difference between being a bad leader with all the baggage of everyday corruption and venality, and being a malignant force.
I mean -- maybe I'd be singing a different tune if Jeb Bush were president right now and we were in the middle of fighting Oil Wars 4, 5, and 6. He would surely have been more competent at pursuing the Republican agenda. But it's hard to imagine we'd feel like we're any closer to the precipice of utter catastrophe than we are now.
