Welcome one and all to The Good Ol' Grateful Thread! A place to discuss all things in the Grateful Dead universe. Talk about things from The Warlocks to Dead & Company, from the Rhythm Devils to the Phil Zone, from Bob's short shorts to Jerry's missing finger, from 1965 until now, and everything in between. Post your record collections, pics from shows you've been to, upcoming shows (including cover bands..JRAD, DSO, etc.), show posters, your favorite era, lyrics, and books, dream set lists... you get the idea.
And be Grateful!

Below is a link to the archive website where you can find a recording of pretty much every show The Grateful Dead has ever played. If anyone else can think of good places to link, let me know and I'll add it to the first post.

This is a link to the archive for the weekly show on Sirius FM's Grateful Dead channel called 'Tales From The Golden Road.' It airs every Sunday, 4-6pm est. They usually have the newest episode uploaded that same Sunday evening. You can also find the 'Big Steve Hour' which airs on Thursdays.

Only started listening to the Dead in the last few years. It started when I downloaded the Day of the Dead tribute album before a long Greyhound bus trip. Had never really listened to the Dead at all before, apart from Live/Dead in high school, which I didn't like then. By the end of the trip, I was in love. I always thought they were a little hammy but hearing some of my other favourite musicians playing their songs made me realize how good of songwriters they were. I slowly started exploring the actual Dead, and thanks to people like @Dark Star Boogie and others at the old forum, have been getting quite the education.

Don't have much on vinyl yet, as I'm trying to curate my collection more toward stuff I actually want specifically in physical form, so this is what I've got as of now. Includes the only two box sets I own.

I'm also in the middle of trying to listen to every show from Europe '72 online. Currently up to Frankfurt.

I guess this is the thread for me. We are everywhere!

Picked up the first 5 studio albums on wax in the boxset when I got my first turntable, really lovely pressings. Found a very clean original pressing of Europe 72 shortly after.

Just picked up a collection that had some new copies of Workingman's Dead and Europe 72, so I'll be doing a comparison of both in due time.

@Dead C - I would kill for a longsleeve of that - mind shooting me a DM if that actually happens?

Sure. Mind letting me know if you choose to PIF that Europe 72?

Wake Up to Find Out is one of the best sounding live shows I own on wax.
cool story about this, one of my favorite shows as well, I got to meet Branford and he was super nice. I asked him about this show and he mentioned it was one of the most fun experiences he ever had playing music on stage. seemed like he was not super into rock music but thought that the boys played jazzy shizz pretty well. Also, great sounding wax and love the bird song mucho

Hey! Not sure if any of you have Sirius FM, but they have a Grateful Dead channel and every Sunday they have a weekly show called 'Tales From The Golden Road'. It can be pretty cool.. sometimes they have interviews with members or people related to the dead. I found an archive site where you can download each show. They usually update it with the newest show the same Sunday it airs, or Monday at the latest. I'll also add this link to the first post.

It's great, and the true gem of the GD Channel is Thursday afternoons and the Big Steve Hour. You can sometimes get some really amazing insights into the behind the scenes road crew stuff and find out just how much modern touring advances were invented on the fly by Steve and his crew.

Listened to the first two discs of Dave’s 30 today. Pretty much the only CDs that come into my house these days are Dead-related. Most of their vinyl releases seem more focused on the novelty of the medium instead of producing some killer sounding stuff. There are some shows that would sound great on vinyl.

That sounds pretty cool. I didn't know about that show, I'll have to check it out. I actually just looked, and the same guy that uploads Tales From The Golden Road also has the Big Steve Hour uploaded to that same site!

Still fairly new to the Dead, but I'm going at my own pace. For me, I had friends growing up who loved them, but I never gave them a chance until a couple of years ago. And, yeah it was because of that Day of the Dead comp. Since then, I've picked up a handful of the newer live releases, like Cornell (though I don't have the vinyl set yet) and most recently the acoustic set from Record Store Day. Studio-wise, I haven't gone too deep (and I feel the consensus is I don't need to?) but I do have the recent Anthem of the Sun reissue and a compilation from the Long Strange Trip documentary (it has both studio and live stuff - mostly live I think).

Studio-wise you need Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. While the studio output gets a bad rap, nothing is necessarily essential other than those two. Explore as you have time and desire on those.

Live is where it’s at and your options are limitless. The band’s peak, imho, is ‘72-74 and almost all the official releases from that period are worthwhile. Generally ‘68-‘78 and ‘89-90 are the best eras to explore, though every year has its own charms and character. Enjoy the adventure!
