On the one hand, Naqoyqatsi is kind of a train wreck. On the other, the Philip Glass score is unbelievable.

I love those “lesser” animated flicks. I’d add Fox & The Hound, Sword in The Stone, The Great Mouse Detective, The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under, etc... I will put them on when I am around the Niece and Nephews because they haven’t seen many of em and it gives me an excuse to rewatch them. Also, Some great non-Disney mouse flicks The Secret Rats of Nihm and An American Tale.

I mostly loved everything about A Quiet Place except it seemed to me there was a huge plot hole. Why didn't they just live by the waterfall? Or, play loud ambient noise all the time at their house? I had a hard time squaring that.

I'm still looking forward to the new one.
 
So it already seems like Pixar’s faith in Onward is barely there. And now the critic reviews are generally lukewarm, which might make less people go see it. Buuuuut...I actually really enjoyed it. Is it the best Pixar has to offer? No. But it’s not as mediocre as people are saying. And look I know how it looks when you watch the trailer. It makes it look like it could be actively bad. But the movie itself isn’t bad at all. The humor, when it’s present, is mostly okay or good. It doesn’t beat into the ground the premise of the setup. It’s mostly an affecting story about brothers and their journey. Story-wise it has some plot cliches, but most big studio movies do. It doesn’t subvert expectations until the end, where I was generally impressed and surprised. I won’t say anything specific about the movie. Just go in with some mild expectations and I think you’ll like it more than you’d be lead to believe. That’s my experience anyway.

I enjoyed Bug’s Life.
 
Saw Portrait of a Lady on Fire last weekend. It was kinda hard to square the hype (I’ve been hearing about this movie for almost a year now) with the reality, but I was describing it to my wife later on and realized it got under my skin a lot more than I’d thought.

It was a little super cheesy that Heloise would have the book open to page 28 in her portrait, and that the artist would include that page number as a detail. I know, it’s a movie and I should really just relax. But that detail strained credulity a bit.

Also saw The Manchurian Candidate for the first time this weekend. Somehow it’s been a cultural blindspot for me, though it’s such a widespread cultural reference that I’d already absorbed it by osmosis. I did love some of the imagery and editing; Frankenheimer is pretty boss.
