Any of the N&G fam get lucky. I see that Vinyl Wings is going to announce it’s blues and rock sub & another message was sent telling that all pressings will be from quality labels like MOV etc so no fears of grey label releases.

Hey Murfocakes - great to hear from you!

We have had 3 winners so far and we've e-mailed each of them, I'm unfortunately not sure whether any were from N&G, so would be great to hear from you if you're out there!

You are absolutely correct - we are launching our Rock & Blues genre in about 3 weeks time! We will begin taking orders in mid-April, and the first box will be announced on 1st of May, with delivery in end of May!

Having been in operation for just over a year now, we have been trying out various suppliers and their product and have made the strategic decision to only focus on those labels which provide a good, high listening experience. We have had some bad experiences with certain labels just as WaxTime, Jazz Images and a few others.

As such, we would like to focus our offering on releases from MOV, Blue Note, Rhino, Fat Possum and a number of others which provide the listening experience that the music we pick deserves! We hope to be able to provide the best product and experience to our beloved members!

Any questions - I'm always here to answer and help out and as always, very much appreciative of the engagement from the N&G community!

Kind regards,

Amiran

@Vinyl Wings - just a quick question; are you able to swap / pick across both subs? So if I went Rock and Blues, but had the picks that month, can you jump across to the Jazz and Soul sub for a month?

Hi!

Sure - although the option won't be directly available in the member's portal to "switch" between genres, if a situation arises where you have the picks of the month and prefer the jazz ones, just reach out to us and of course we'll make sure to satisfy your request.

Long way of saying that we'll always try to make it work and satisfy the customer ;)

Best,

Amiran

Signed up today - any clues for May Rock subscriptions ?
Hello and welcome on board! Many thanks for signing up and I do hope you enjoy the subscription

Well - without giving too much away and taking away from the surprise factor, I can tell you that in the first few months you can expect the following artists to be featured: Creedence Clearwater Revival, Frank Zappa, John Lee Hooker, Grateful Dead, Otis Spann, Lightning Hopkins, Ten Year After.

Which albums and in what months I'll leave as a surprise for the time being!

As always - in case of any issues, questions or requests please don't hesitate to get in touch either here or hello@vinylwings.co.uk. I try to read this forum once a day :)

Best,

Rock & Blues - Records of the Month - May 2021

Creedence Clearwater Revival CCR Cosmos Factory.jpg
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Cosmo's Factory, 1970
Concord

To us, there is no voice that defined 70s rock as much John Fogerty's did. The band's fifth studio album, and in just two years, cemented their commercial success as well as a place in rock and roll history!

Mike Bloomfield Al Kooper Stephen Stills Super Session.jpg
Mike Bloomfield / Al Kooper / Stephen Stills
Super Session, 1968
Music on Vinyl

The brainchild of Al Kooper, this one of a kind blues collaboration featured the incredible Stephen Stills and Mike Bloomfield. The success of this record opened the door for the "supergroup" concept of the late 1960s and 1970s for the likes of Blind Faith, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and others.

Allman Brothers Seven Turns.jpg
Allman Brothers Band
Seven Turns, 1990
Music on Vinyl

This is the Allman Brothers Band's comeback album, and their best blues-based outing since Idlewild South that restored a lot of their reputation.

Jazz & Soul - Records of the Month - May 2021

Freddie Hubbard Open Sesame.jpg
Freddie Hubbard
Open Sesame, 1960
Blue Note

Freddie Hubbard alone is a delight to listen to, but on his debut album he was joined by the incomparable McCoy Tyner, Tina Brooks and Sam Jones, making this an absolute must-have for any jazz collection!

Wilson Pickett Wicked Pickett.jpg
Wilson Pickett
The Wicked Pickett, 1967
Music on Vinyl

Wilson Pickett has to feature in every true soul lover's collection! With his 4th studio album he brought his heavy, in-your-face Memphis style to a number of incredible covers, most notably to his version of the timeless classic Mustang Sally.

Jaco Pastorius.jpg
Jaco Pastorius
Jaco Pastorius, 1976
Music on Vinyl

There's very few bassist who could channel energy into their instrument the way that Jaco could! His debut solo album featured the elite of the jazz world including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and David Sanborn. The record was recorded just a few months ahead of Black Market - Jaco's first album with Weather Report.

Free
Fire and Water, 1970
Music on Vinyl

Free
was a one of the British bands that pioneered Hard Rock, in no small part thanks to one of our favourite vocalists - Paul Rogers. With their third album featuring the timeless rock anthem All Right Now the band cemented their position as Rock royalty!

51ricqSSlTL._SY1000_.jpg
Otis Spann
The Biggest Thing Since Colossus, 1969
Music on Vinyl

This may be one of the greatest blues albums we've heard in a long time! What the cover doesn't tell you is that the great Chicago Blues pianist Otis Spann is backed by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, who were touring the US at the time! Whilst Spann is simply sensational, it is often claimed that Peter Green produced some of his best playing on this album.

81MDLGKEpFL._AC_SL1200_.jpg
Thin Lizzy
Johnny The Fox, 1976
UMC/Decca

Following the success of their Jailbreak album, Thin Lizzy wasted no time in recording their awesome follow-up. The album is incredibly diverse - featuring heavy Lizzy guitar riffs we love, an incredibly funky title track and beautiful ballads! Written and recorded while bassist/vocalist Phil Lynott was recovering from hepatitis, it is also the last studio album to feature Brian Robertson as a full member of the band.

Jazz & Soul - Records of the Month - June 2021

Chet Baker.png
Chet Baker
Chet is Back! 1962
Music on Vinyl

Recorded just 3 weeks following a one-year long incarceration in Italy, and backed by an incredible group of up-and-coming European stars, Chet may never have sounded better! Earth, Wind & Fire
Spirit, 1976
Music on Vinyl

There is nothing more contagious and uplifting than the funky energy of playing an EWF album! Released 45 years ago, Spirit is the band's seventh studio album and features the funk classic Getaway as well as the poetic ballad Imagination.

81rWXVajVsL._SL1500_.jpg
The Oscar Peterson Trio
Night Train, 1963
Verve Records

Dedicated to his father who was a sleeping-car attendant on the Canadian Pacific Railways, Night Train is Oscar Peterson's most famous record bringing us the kind of masterful and tight playing for which we love him! The album is simply effortless cool which will capture you from the moment it starts!

Big Brother & The Holding Company
Cheap Thrills, 1968

One of the most eagerly anticipated albums of 1968 by press and public, Cheap Thrills met every expectation and then some! A truly classic album and an important part of Rock history, this album is a time capsule for one of rock's most distinguished singers - Janis Joplin

buddy-guy.jpg

Buddy Guy & Junior Wells
Play the Blues, 1972
Music on Vinyl

This southern-style, Rhythm & Blues album was recorded in the Miami Criteria Studios in the second half of 1970. This is probably the best recordings Guy & Wells ever made, sounding clean and smooth - an excellent album from two masters of the blues!

Aerosmith
Permanent Vacation, 1987
UMC

Following a temporary break-up and subsequent reunion of the band in the early 80s, Aerosmith's ninth studio album PermanentVacation would regain the band their popularity with electric numbers including Dude (Looks like a Lady) and the beautiful Angel.

Ramsey Lewis
Sun Goddess, 1974
Music on Vinyl

Produced by Ramsey Lewis himself along with Teo Macero and Maurice White (Earth Wind & Fire), Sun Goddess will pull you into a mystical funk world within the first 30 seconds of playing. One of the most feel-good records we've played in a while - this one's perfect for a warm July afternoon!

5616_foto1_product_xl.jpg

Bar-Kays
Soul Finger, 1967
Music on Vinyl

Soul Finger
is the debut album of the Bar-Kays, who were tutored by various members of Booker T. & the M.G.'s. The instrumental album is super energetic and funky, and will certainly be a hit soundtrack to your next summer barbecue or gathering!

Horace Silver Quintet
Doin' the Thing at the Village Gate, 1961
Blue Note

Recorded in May 1961 live at the Village Gate, NYC, this is Horace Silver's only live album for Blue Note and is a funky soul-jazz classic. An absolutely steaming set which will have you jumping - it's definitely a must-have in your jazz collection!

81cM0hOjS2L._AC_SL1400_.jpg

Idris Muhammad
Power of Soul, 1974
Music on Vinyl

Drummer and king of funk grooves Idris Muhammad is joined by an all-star collection on this incredible recording - Bob James, Grover Washington Jr. and Randy Brecker among others! This Music on Vinyl exclusive is a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on translucent yellow coloured vinyl available to our Vinyl Wings members! To this day, we've yet to hear an album as uniquely groovy as this one - the best way to describe it is a deeply spacey jazz odyssey!

buddy-guy.jpg

Otis Redding
Sings Soul Ballads, 1965
Music on Vinyl

Otis Redding's second album features an incredible collection of soul classics we've come to love as well as some lesser known gems! Backed by the incredible Stax house band Booker T & The M.Gs, the album sounds tight and is a must-have in any Soul collection!

81MDLGKEpFL._AC_SL1200_.jpg

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
Just Coolin', 2020
Blue Note

This never-before-released studio album by Blakey was recorded in 1959 in Rudy Van Gelder's living room studio in New Jersey. An absolutely smokin' session which featured a short-lived but equally incredible line-up of The Jazz Messengers - Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt. An awesome addition to our member's jazz shelves which we can't wait for you to hear!

Rock & Blues - Records of the Month - August 2021

Chet Baker.png

Frank Zappa
Hot Rats, 1969
UMC

Hot Rats
was Zappa's first recording project after the dissolution of the Mothers of Invention. This incredible album really displayed Zappa's creativity and ability on the guitar, not to mention his overall wackiness! Former band member Captain Beefheart delivers awesome vocals for one of the tracks on what is otherwise an instrumental album described by Zappa himself as "a movie for your ears".

5616_foto1_product_xl.jpg

John Lee Hooker
Never Get Out of These Blues Alive, 1972
Music on Vinyl

The absolute master of the blues John Lee Hooker recorded this album within just two days in 1971, working together with young stars Van Morrison and Steve Miller, among others. John takes centre stage delivering the hard edged blues he's known for, whilst giving his fellow musicians enough space to jam along - just like we like to hear!

81rWXVajVsL._SL1500_.jpg

Blue Oyster Cult
Fire of Unknown Origin, 1981
Music on Vinyl

After a lacklustre few albums, Blue Oyster Cult brought back their successful writers team including musician Patti Smith and dark-fantasy writer Michael Moorcock. This would be the final studio album with the band's original line-up for seven years and it certainly feels like they put everything into this one - a landmark piece in the band's awesome history!
