So do many reissue labels though. I’d be shocked if they paid all the licensing fees up front. They had a bunch of projects killed after test pressing stage so paying it all up front wouldn’t make sense.

They also only pay part up front for pressing too and remainder upon delivery.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they had never gotten some titles licensed before test pressing. Knowing what we do about the real final nail in their coffin and also the whole Roberto Rodriguez Sin City realize your vision method of doing things. Storf - “We’ll show Lauryn just how awesome her album can sound.” Ms. Hill - “I don’t give a fuck white boy.”

After posting this, i realize there is little chance of them getting access to the masters prior to talking to the rights holder. I still like the idea of Lauryn Hill telling Storf to fuck off though.

Haha yea. Stuff like the Nilsson does Newman comes to mind. They got the tapes, they cut it AAA and did test pressings, then license got pulled and the label did it themselves. I also doubt that VMP paid up front for 7500 copies of the Dead anthology then only pressed 2500.

On the flip side, would be surprised if the labels only got paid per unit sold.

How could anyone get access to masters without going through the rights holder? No one.

However, there are also cases of bigger reissue rights deals. For example, Music Matters had a license with BN that allowed them to pull any tapes they wanted and even get them to test press stage. They paid something up front for rights and access, then the bulk on a per unit basis. Like many other licenses there was no cap on pressing quantity, so they could go back to the well as many times as possible.

Which, by the way, is what brought Classic Records down. Overpressing Led Zeppelin substantially but under-reporting pressing quantities very substantially. You don't mess with the Zep management.

The terms of any deal are largely dependent on volume. A low pressing run gets a higher license fee to compensate for the lower per copy points. Remember, the label makes money from every pressing sold regardless - royalties. A very high press run is different.

People often assume the licensing cost is the big part, but it isn't. Insurance for master tapes is. You can probably cut a deal for Zep masters, but no one outside a major could afford the insurance, and the mastering studio won't have enough insurance to cover the value of a Zep master tape.

That's why more and more, the indie reissue labels are doing B or even C titles. Not licensing. insurance.

Generally if the source is a label that won't give out master tapes or if the insurance costs outweighs the insurance cost. Its not too costly to get Boots Randolph master tapes, but way back, an indie reissue label had miraculously obtained rights and cut a deal to reissue Beatles, but couldn't come up with the insurance. Today, they probably wouldn't be able to get anyone to insure.

Mostly what I see of non-major reissue labels are 'c' level titles, and often they can only get a high res digital file.

Doing a copy of the master tape is quite costly and is usually only done by a significant label, like VMP was doing with Sony. Significant operations, like Chad, can cut collaborative deals with labels like Universal, and Warners still give out tapes in some circumstances.

The main rule is that there really are no firm rules, and money talks.

I honestly don’t know the last time I had Taco Bell. 😟
I guess. But I don't eat beef anymore, so it would be a splurge (at taco bell, lol). Thankfully I like their bean burritos because I'm addicted to their diablo sauce and since they stopped selling that in grocery stores I have to go steal a bunch every couple months to restock.
