The May 2025 Spin Challenge - Music, Music, Read All About It!

Day 5 - No One Here Gets Out Alive - Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman

The Doors - The Doors

Remember what I was saying about Pink Floyd, about it being to to pull off my shelf and spin because I listen to it too often back in High School well that goes for the Doors too. This challenge prompted me to finally queue up the Rhino Hi-Fi edition that’s resided in my “new additions” stack for a few months now. This does sound fantastic, I will still need to get to LA Woman at some point.

Play something from your middle school or adolescent years.

Goo Goo Dolls - A Boy Named Goo

I was able to go to several concerts at the Fair for free when I was in junior high. One of them was Goo Goo Dolls with Jewel in 1996. This is when they were still sounding like a band obsessed with the Replacements

Day 7 - Strange Things Happen - Stewart Copeland
Play something by an artist whose writing style or lyrics you don't really like, even though you may like the overall body of work.
OR
Play some Police, or a Copeland project.

Relatively under the radar Copeland side project that is a pretty crack band...

Copeland King Cosma & Belew - Gizmodrome Live

Day 8 - Miles: The Autobiography - Miles Davis with Quincy Troupe
Wow, don't meet your heroes. Miles really tells us a lot in this book, and it ain't all pretty.
Play an artist that you look beyond their shortcomings or bad deeds and can still enjoy
OR
Play some Miles or more jazz

It's incredibly disappointing and confounding how so many musicians with infinitely creative artistic vision can't grasp and practice the basic concepts of human decency.

This lady is the opposite of that. The pride of Tryon, NC. You can see and feel her physical reaction to this song. Crushingly beautiful...

Nina Simone - Pastel Blues

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

I’ve got two copies of this album in my collection this is the OG 1970 pressing with the beat up cover. I also have a “We Are Vinyl” euro pressing as well but apparently this version is good enough because the reissue still remains sealed on my shelf for some reason.

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but probably given that I ramble on in here all the time. Anyway, my local buddy and jazz nerd friend, who comes here sometimes as @potatosocks, had a funny take on Bitches Brew: It’s one of those jazz records that are great and that you enjoy playing regularly, about once a year, but in that moment you pull it from the stack and are about to play it, you often say “nah, not this year”. Glad you actually got it to the table this year!

The Knack - Get the Knack

Their lyrics can be pretty misogynistic at times (especially “(She’s So) Selfish”), but I’d be lying if I said these songs didn’t rock (especially “(She’s So) Selfish” again)

Oh man, there’s this viral french tv ad doing the rounds in Quebec right now, for the hardware store Rona, where they changed the lyrics of My Sharona to “Mike chez Rona” (Mike at Rona’s). It’s brilliant! The actor playing “Mike” (the hardware store expert you go see for everything) was even featured in character in person watching the Canadiens game during the playoffs.

edit: it’s in french but you’ll get the gist

Day 2 - Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd - Nick Mason

I found this a little tame and polite. But as a Pink Floyd fan I loved reading the history, even without any gossip or crazy stories of drug use or infighting.

Play something by Pink Floyd or maybe some psych rock.

The Flaming Lips, Stardeath & White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins & Peaches – Dark Side Of The Moon

Superb take on Dsotm, this.
