Any DJ's out there? I used to play records out at bars in the early 2000's and was just getting back into it when Covid shut everything down. Luckily there is mixcloud.com where anyone can upload their own mixes. Anyone else put their stuff up?

Here are my mixes. I do vinyl only sets so I thought it would be appropriate for this forum. Mostly funk, soul, rock. Psychedelic in nature?


There are tons of good shows on Mixcloud and there is a bit of a social aspect where if you follow someone you can see what they were listening to and find new shows you might like.

Not a DJ, but I love me a good Mixcloud mix. Always been tempted to put a thread like this up, good move.

For some reason, I've found that a good dance mix is great to work to. I don't know if it's the intensity of it, but I just get loads done.

Okay, I'm going to have to show my stupid here and ask what seems to me the most obvious question that no doubt has a most obvious (and embarrassing for me) answer: If vinyl is your source, how are you putting mixes online? I spent a lot of hours in the 80s recording vinyl to cassettes, but what's the process for creating digital mixes? I know there are turntables with USP outputs, but I've always thought they were towards the lower end of the quality spectrum. So what's the process? And ultimately, I guess I also wonder what's the point to the extent the songs might already be available as digital files? (I can believe there is some music that's only available on vinyl, but is that the priority?)

Thanks in advance. I've seen other places where vinyl dj's have posted playlists and I've always been stymied by the apparent contradiction.

Yeah there are USB turntables/mixers. My computer has a line in and I use Audacity to capture my set through that, but I used to have a USB mixer.

Back when I was starting out CDJ decks were pretty expensive and not really that great. Vinyl was super cheap and accessible due to the boomers dumping their collections. Some buddies of mine were DJing in clubs, scratching/mixing hip-hop and dance music. We were all record nerds and convinced some local hipster dive bars to let us play records that couldn't/shouldn't be played in the clubs. I dunno we were just always a vinyl only crew playing out. All of us were trying to outdo each other with either the weirdest or the dopest shit.

I would say that 90% of the music I have on vinyl is available on major streaming platforms and 99% is available in some form digitally. But damn. Is it fun to make a playlist on spotivy? Click add. Click add. It always seems like a chore. I personally enjoy holding and playing my records. I like hunting through my stacks for some half remembered thing. Or playing a song and then realizing that this other song would be a perfect transition. Sure I could incorporate the digital files and cds and youtubes but there is a little challenge to make this thing outta a limited stock. So many times I have thought of the perfect song to go to next but hey. I don't own it. I could play it but that's boring. That forces me into finding something different that still. When I first started playing records in bars there was no digital downloads. You played what you brought with you and made it work....or not. I dig trying to make (sorta) seamless transitions between songs. I like that I find new shit by dropping the needle on some old record I bought for the one hit but it didn't work with the previous song but hey this other song rules holy shit.

Damn. Why do any of us collect this medium? Like I said. 99% of this is available digitally in some way or another. Because it is f'in cool to hold and interact with.

Haha. Thank you! That's a great explanation, and I'm totally on board with what you're saying about the upside to working with and from vinyl. Very interesting what you've noted about the way your thinking about music is different when you are relying on what you have in hand and working from what you know/discover from dropping the needle. There's no doubt in my mind that's a better and more enjoyable way to go. Remembering how much time I spent recording albums and making mixtapes from vinyl, the two turntable/mixer setup sounds very cool, but I suppose I should be glad I don't have anything like that (well, plenty of turntables, but no mixer!) because I could see myself losing months at a time if I did!

Yeah. As far as time sinks, my things usually take between 2-4 hours to put together and record. I usually start with an intro song or even the end song and work my way from there. For me it isn't just a matter of playing my favorite songs. I really try to create a flow so a lot of times I may have something I have been really into but it just doesn't fit. I also usually try to record a mostly live set with cross-faded transitions and such, so a mistake means going back to the beginning sometimes. haha oops

Playing with your records is fun!

Thanks for posting playlists everyone. I listen to a lot of music at work and like to just let playlists go for a while because I don't really have time to mess with selecting songs. The spotify algorithm has gotten a lot worse and tends to just repeat stuff nowadays. Hope this thread continues.

Here is some guy's mix I was diggin' last night.

 
A while back I came into a tote of 45s that belonged to my father. About half of them were completely worn out and unlistenable to but there were a few gems that still had some life in them. I threw together this set as a tribute to him. I like to imagine these records were carted around the University campus and played at parties/study sessions and the like. Mostly 50's and 60's rock and instrumentals.
 
Headed down into the basement to make this funky, funny, weird (mostly) live all vinyl mix. Enjoy.

@mawesome did you get the email Mixcloud sent out about transparency of their charts? I thought it was interesting. They seem to weight external shares more than I thought they would

Yeah. Interesting little read. Nice to know that they weigh listens differently. I like that it's not just a bunch of 5 second click throughs that influence it.
