Was listening the the album this morning. I like the idea of borrowing the stories of various icons to tell her personal story. Some of the artists I know, but others I’m a little in the dark. I thought it be a good idea for people to post in here to learn more about each icon and how they relate to the song.

Love this album! Reading her track by track breakdown on pitchfork really helped me understand everything better and pointed out some more subtle details as well. Definitely recommend reading it, while listening.

Reading this makes me want to listen to Kendrick Lamar "i" while reading Nikki Giovanni's "Ego Tripping" to compare to the song, need to do that soon.

And man she did a good job of capturing their essence.

It's an exceptional album and I desperately need to add it to my collection. This weird travelogue through time and cultur and yet firmly entrenched in our moment. V v good.

In the pitchfork interview she talked about all the research she did. I just noticed in the lyrics booklet, VMP version, that on the credits page there is a list down at the bottom that lists at least one pixel of culture for each song. Must have been at least part of the research.
