Everything Video Games!

Played about 3 hours total of Clair Obscur. I don't know if this will be something that I'll stick with. The Dodging and Parrying is straight up not fun. I dropped down to Story difficulty because I had it with not being able to do a single parry, dodging way too soon. There is no way to time the dodges or parries efficiently, everyone is different. I've played all the Soulslike games but this one is annoying in a different way. "skill issue", "git gud" I do not care. The problem is the enemy damage in Story is way too low so battles are more boring, just waiting until enough attacks kill the opponent.

These mechanics in a turn based game are interesting to say the least. I have never liked Final Fantasy games, all the wild hairstyles, the combat just doesn't do anything for me. Maybe that's why I'm scratching my head when I see a lot of folks singing it's praises. It's just not for me.
I get what you're saying, and if you've never gotten into JRPGs like Final Fantasy this likely won't be your cup of tea.

Parrying/dodging can be pretty tricky, but as you keep working on it, either you'll start learning the timing based on previous encounters, or you'll get better learning the visual cues. I was pretty terrible at it first, now at least I can get through maybe say 3 out of a 4 hit combo. There's some fights (optional) that solely rely on parrying...enough times and I mastered it thankfully and felt rewarding when I did so.

The meat and potatoes though, and how you're truly going to 'get gud' is when you start maximizing your pictors/luminas. Once you start combining those (I can't recommend going for all the energising start ones you can), with complementary skills not just on one character, but throughout your party, you can pretty much one turn most encounters.

Like, there's a Pictos that doubles your burn stacks. Couple that with the skill for Maelle that applies burn while in offensive stance (then immediately switches to defensive stance) and the other that applies more burn when in defensive stance and enemies pretty much get wrecked before even attacking.

Then you have skills that synergize with say "Marked" so you can apply mark, then follow it up with some massive damage.

The combat system is incredibly deep and rewarding...but it also takes a lot of time to figure it all out. Each new character has their own mechanics that aren't really clear until you use it a ton.

And to be perfectly honest, I'm still not probably maximizing as much as I can. I'm maybe late game(?) mid-to-late(?) and I feel like there's so much I can do to make my party better all around. I'm looking at my pictos/luminas and skill trees, as well as my weapons and their abilities at camp and while I'm doing okay, I feel like there's always something I'm missing...like maybe my skills need recoating.

Especially with Lune and Sciel. I don't think I've mastered their mechanics in a way to truly make them great additions to the party. Monoco is just an absolute beast, Maelle is overpowered...but I can't figure out those two yet and customize their skills efficiently.

True, I didn't realize how to upgrade my weapons or add Pictors until the last half hour of playing last night, I was fighting with the basic weapons and no upgrades. I'll probably keep with it for a little while longer to see if it gets better.

unfortunately you just need to learn it. I didn't even know about it in the very beginning, but once I discovered it everything changed. I just want to counter everything in this game, I love the battle mechanics so much!

I'm sure you can get through the game if you build around not being able to parry, but you'll definitely be unable to defeat the optional bosses that require it.

also, the game gets hard, harder, hardest... maybe story mode is too easy now, but further into the game you're starting to sweat just looking at some of the bosses attacks. I can't say for sure, but even on normal I didn't have much trouble early on against anyone

I'm super guilty of this myself... I'm definitely messing around with it some, but mostly just brute forcing my way through via parry/counters, it's just so much fun!! (except when it's not... grumbles as I think about the boss I'm currently up to 😂)
