After many (many) years of not getting the Dead, I am currently finally listening to Anthem of the Sun. Now THIS I get. And I can also see where many of those lo-fi indie bands I loved in the 90s were getting their inspiration. I am so glad that I finally decided to see how the Dead started out...

Fair enough. I have to admit that there is bit of voodoo in tubes, for me, and it never really surprises me if one lasts 6 months or 60 years. I have examples of both in my gear! Either way, I'll keep Upscale in mind next time I'm looking for some glass.

Right. Viva claims to test and match as well. I've purchased tubes from all over the world via internet, and haven't noticed any one merchant that offers matching being appreciably worse than another. My amp has bias meters, too, so it's easy for me to see if they are way off right out of the box.

Why would Viva being the merchant have anything to do with whether a set of tubes lasted or not? If we're talking about EHX tubes, don't all merchants pretty much stand the same chance of getting a dud or duds in a shipment?

I am spinning ROF again and there are still moments where I feel like the bass is artificial. I don't have any tone controls in my system, so it's pretty much WYSIWYG. I suspect that the real problem is 15+ years of hearing this album with very little low end representation. Don't worry...

It doesn't sound distorted or anything. I'll give it a few more spins before deciding if it's a real issue. "Too much bass" is not a normal complaint for me...

Am I the only one who thinks it's bass-heavy? It's hardly unlistenable, but I keep finding myself noticing the bass as if someone punched in the Loudness button or something.

VMP Strokes is bass heavy. That being said, it is kind of fun to hear the bass lines. But this is overdone.
