Following the independence of 26 of the 32 counties in Ireland in 1922 the United Kingdom changed to become the United Kingdom of Britain and Northern Ireland. Ireland was not then a republic, it had dominion status which was modelled upon Canadian independence. Ireland did not become a republic until 1949.
