I got an email about a Skullcrusher one year anniversary edition and I’m like WHY? And it occurs to me that Pumas was the first time I remember an album being branded that way.
Are you talking about the version they put out during 2020 with the additional songs? Maybe they were the first to do it on vinyl, but, I distinctly remember sweet little Norah Jones doing the same thing for multiple CD releases back in the mid-aughts.
They've pretty much become the punchline to vinyl pressing jokes at this point, right up there with Adele 33 and The Cure RSD Picture Discs. But, people must be buying these if they keep doing it. I mean, I don't really see any overstock showing up in deep discount mystery box sales or anything (like Adele 33).
What I am specifically talking about is releasing a one year anniversary version. So yes the deluxe version from 2020 or whenever that says one year anniversary on the cover.
And, again, as much as I dislike the Deluxe Version immediate re-release bit, I’m not going to join in on the Pumas backlash bandwagon tour. I’m not going to fault any band for reissuing and repackaging, or releasing merch out the ass during a pandemic.
I hate that trend a lot. But it has been around in some form for years. I don’t really double dip when it come to vinyl. I’ll stream the additional songs, or maybe even download them if they’re good. As was stated earlier, we don’t have to buy multiple variants and versions. That’s more due the hobby sickness in us than the fault of any one band who offers them up IMO.
How is the 1 year anniversary version with extra songs really any different from the deluxe edition of an album released a year later? That has been done for years. People don’t shit on Norah Jones at every turn for doing the same thing in the CD era. Because CDs were cheaper than vinyl?
