It makes me sad for her.

I’m out of the loop, what’s happening?

Same. It really sucks that she had an agreement to own her music, 1 album for every new album she put out, but that option is no longer available after the sale.

It just blows my mind that someone would not own THEIR OWN MUSIC! Like, how is that even possible??? How did we get to this point?

@Teeeee That's been pretty standard in the music industry when you sign to a label. Only recently has that been changing.

Ewwww. I was unaware, @RenegadeMonster . What other artists have gone through a similar struggle?

@Teeeee I can't think of any high profile instances like Taylor Swift. Most artist wouldn't have the money to purchase back their catalog. However I know artist have gone lobeless. The only high profile things I can think of are related to Artist wanting to leave their current label.

Not only do the labels own the artist catalog, but they also have built into their contact that the artist can not leave on their own accord and move to a different label or self release music. The label would still own the rights to the Artist Music for X amount of Years. I know Kesha and Jojo have gone through this.

@Teeeee Prince was in a fairly recent struggle- maybe 20 years ago. IIRC Ray Charles was one of the first artists to own their masters. No one else did at the time.
