I feel like if Kanye had edited Donda down to 12-15 tracks it could've been great. There are a lot of excellent songs here, but there's too much bloat and a lack of cohesion.
I've always thought Kanye's strength, even at his peak, was NOT his rapping, at all. His great albums are great almost in spite of his rapping, which is a weird thing to say about a rap album.
@LeSamourai Yeah... I'm not sure how to interpret that take? He is in the convo for best lyrisist of all time. His flow is verstile, and he has proven capable of slipping over a wide array of beats.
Like, the only critique I can see there being is if you don't like the nasly nature of his voice... but much like Danny Brown he utlizes it in suprising ways (ala "u" on TPAB).
In contrast, Kanye's flow is medicore and his lyrics best trait are their wit. Other than that, I find them to be little more than the babbling of an unhinged ego. The appeal has always been the beats which is why I prefer The Blueprint, Be or The Cool to anything Kanye has dropped.
But I mean, I consider Kendrick #2 in line behind Andre 3000 as it pertains to my favorite rappers so I'm also biased.
