Not to short shrift anything, I’d look at what the weakest part of your system is and weigh that against “bang for the buck” improvement to make my decision.

My cycle has gone turntable -> speakers -> preamp -> cart -> speakers -> assess your deck -> repeat and add an amplifier somewhere in there if you have passive speakers
