I also found that the different elements, like the off kilter saxophone were underplayed as mere accents in what largely was a very musically unadventurous album. Also the singer has an interesting voice but his lyrics are fucking awful.
I also think that starting an album with 6 minute boring instrumental with a recurrent annoying text alert sound on it was an odd choice.
@Lord Diaper Baby it was meant to say self reverential but my phone keeps trying to auto correct that to referential, just noticed that now when you pointed it out and my phone tried to correct it three times when trying to reply
Lol...I was trying to think if I ever listened to self-referential music. At first I thought maybe some Zappa - seems like maybe something that would have parodic possibilities. Or how Trent Reznor has used recurring melodies throughout his career (especially DS on). Or a rapper who says their own name a lot as an ad-lib
I thought you were talking about the fact he says “IT’S BLACK COUNTRY OUT THERE” a bunch of times, like they were mentioning themselves.
I like it. It ticks a lot of the instrumental boxes I like. I like Slint, I like this. Does it do anything new? Not really, but it doesn’t need to. At its worst it’s like a Murray Lachlan Young skit or something, but all in I liked it.
@Selaws I found the the fact he’d left his phone on and the text alert going off every couple of minutes pretty annoying, I didn’t like any of it but I hated that track lol.
@wokeupnew, I've learned a few things. 1, we all have some amazing musical taste and I've discovered things that I would have otherwise never enjoyed. 2, I let hype simmer, meaning when something catches that buzz around here, I add it to my Spotify albums and leave it be for a week or so, that way the mental hype wares off and you have a more objective view. Black Country is still sitting there
