The first rule of record reviews is pay no attention to record reviews. Listen for yourself. Love what you love. Don't ever let anyone else dictate the value of music.
eh i was never really in the hype cycle.. i dunno why but julien baker just doesn't click with me, it really should, but something about her voice or music just never resonated
I haven’t listened yet…I was going to wait on my vinyl to come but it still hasn’t shipped. So might as well stream it today. Loved her first album, really enjoyed the second, and I was hoping this one would be the one that really broke her through - in the same way Punisher did for Phoebe Bridgers.
I've listened to it 3 times already, trying to figure out what it feels like. The first two records had very distinct feelings to me. This one feels more upbeat but still melancholy. Lots of different textures and musically experimentation. Rating may be on the money, although it feels like a grower.
completely agree w @Yer Ol' Uncle D first comment to not pay attention to reviews. I stopped paying attention to Pitchfork reviews in 2003 when they gave Nada Surf's Let Go at 3.8. I do read it for general music news.
