They have extended on blu, they also have 4K on extended too. I’m considering selling my blu extended to get 4K. Hit me up if that’s something you’re interested in.
@Delta Don they're coming out with the extended 4k with all the extras this summer. So wait if you care about that. I went the digital route for 4k and it's great
I care but my fanatic friend will get it. I’ll only care if there are 4K deleted scenes that are added into the extended versions. Other than that I can see them once at his house and be fine
The version coming out this summer is Peter Jackson's "remaster" that he completed in 2020. A large part of the work was to transition the analog appearance of TLOTR films to align with the digital look of The Hobbit films. Early reviews are very negative, the soul of the movies has been stripped away. Avoid the new version
Also, if you are looking for a version of The Hobbit that won't insult your intelligence, I know of a fantastic edit that keeps the story as close to the original text as possible, and breaks the Dol Goldur subplot off into a standalone short film. If you're interested I can send you the link

It's good. I'm upgrading to a 4K TV soon though and thinking about the LOTR and Hobbit 4k sets.
For those wanting to go with the 4K set - even with the visual changes, I'd hold off...a more complete collection is planned for release in 2021 with brand-new bonus content.
@LeeVing swe my original post about the ultimate release coming.
also if you have 4K device, watch a comparison video on lotr blu to 4K comparison. Some instances had them removing a blue or green filter on the scenes. It’s very interesting
