I'm powering through. The album is so good but, fuck me, they ruined it with this mix

That’s disconcerting. I’ve got the vinyl inbound.

Looked it up, saw the name "Dave Fridmann" and this made a lot of sense. This guy is infamous for intentionally adding distortion and turning the gain up in the mix. He did this same thing to the third MGMT and has done so on several other albums he's produced and I have no idea why.

Did he do the vinyl mix as well?

I'm not sure but given that albums he produces use that distortion as "aesthetic", the mixing wasn't an oversight likely, and it was "intended" to sound like that, crazy as that sounds. So odds are, the vinyl record will have that same built-in distortion as well. I could be wrong though - i'm going purely off this producer's track record.

Well, if the vinyl really is just as bad, then I’ll be hoping the prices go up and I can flip it. I really like Baroness, but not so much as to keep a record that sounds as bad as this mix potentially is.
