In my top 3. Most likely not in most folks top 5...or maybe 10. Saw them in 1992 in a small club and my ears are still ringing. Highly recommended if you're unfamiliar.
I like Swervedriver but I am a little confused by their classification as a shoegaze band. Seems more like grunge. Maybe with some shoegaze tinges. Not that shoegaze has ever been the most clearly defined genre.
I agree with @duke86fan with regards to "Nowhere" having a bit of britpop in the mix. But I think that's why I like it so much. A little less droney. I like MBV a lot, and I realize that they are the quintessential shoegaze band, but my hot take is that they are a tad overrated. Not trying to change any minds...just my opinion.
The best shoegaze albums bring other genres into the mix. If you want pure shoegaze just listen to Loveless, but as a style playing it straight can get pretty boring pretty quick
I agree. I love MBV so much that I frequently reach out to other "pure" shoegaze bands and am usually left wanting more. I don't know if I've ever heard the term applied to them but for my money in terms of elaborate pedal boards, Dino Jr. And Built to Spill give me that fix in a more satisfying way.
