They're one of those bands where it depends not only on your personal tastes, but also on what time period you listen to... King Crimson from 1969 vs 1984 vs now and a ton of spots in between just sound almost like different bands entirely. And kind of like Pink Floyd, I like most "phases," but not all.

I don't know if it's over hyped, but not everything is for everyone. You tried it, you didn't like it, it's really that simple. That was Eddie Gale's Ghetto Music for me, it was a VMP "Must Have" Blue Note........I tried to like it, but it just wasn't my thing. But I wouldn't say it was over hyped ;)

Had a prog phase in my early 20s - old (Yes, KC, Tull, Genesis, Soft Machine, etc) & new (Marillion, Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, Flower Kings). Most I no longer listen to, besides singular albums. However, KC is one I still love. Their evolutions (e.g. 70s prog to 80s art rock) always seemed natural & not reactionary. Of course, YMMV. Curious, what did you listen to?

I don't understand putting any stock in such lists and then dismissing them as overhype when you don't like a thing. No one feels the same about every bit of music. To go in expecting to have your life changed seems doomed to fail a lot of the time. And not all life-changing music hits like a bolt of lightning.

i just expect it to be (hitting like a bolt of lightning) because hey i have a very short attention span a lot of the time and an album is a very long commitment

as for the putting stock in lists... cmon i just wanna conform and have people like me

@AnthonyI I adore Ghetto Music but I also totally get not enjoying it... it's certainly not a for-everyone kind of thing. :)

@duke86fan I agree with G'n'F'n'G on this one, but I also totally get it... I put Led Zeppelin on a pedastal when I was 15 after hearing the song "No Quarter" and immediately walked from my inside-a-mall recording studio to the music store down the hall and bought a Led Zep boxed set... all I liked was that song and my heart kind of sunk.

I have problems with a lot of best of lists. I just don't agree with the need to pit good music against other good music, and often times, a narrow subset of people are all that is polled anyway. Surprise, surprise, your tastes are different than a group of cis men.
