I think it's Coltrane's late ensembles, which happened to be in the mid-'60s. That's how I read it anyway.

I think the late ensembles refers to the end of career.

An ensemble is just another word for a group. So I read this to mean he played archaic free jazz for Coltrane over the 2 years, during which the line-up changed to be a different ensemble. I know Rashied Ali joined at one point, and McCoy Tyner left, etc
