@duke86fan so you believe that 8 of these are the greatest hip hop albums of the 90s? This also doesn't just go in one direction, because the decision to leave things off is also a choice
i mean if you were going to ask a lot of people what the general best rap albums of the 90s are youd get at the very least half of them (de la and missy might not make the cut sadly), the chronic is a well regarded classic along with wu tang, tribe is nice to have, and miseducation is still loved by everyone to this day.
@duke86fan I know that we are very different ages, but there's no Illmatic, 2Pac, or Biggie on this list. I'm not even a big fan of B.I.G., but Lil Kim and not him, that's unforgivable. And while I love Midnight Marauders, a lot of people would actually put Low End Theory on there instead. Nobody's picking Da Brat.
I mean it's the staffs favorite albums, not the greatest, So somebody there's favorite album is Da Brat that's why we got the Da Brat. They could use some new blood over there picking albums. I do agree with quite a few of them though
@TheMythOfSisyphus after someone directs me to the thread laughing at their choices, maybe you can direct me to where anyone is legitimately "up in arms" or enraged about it. It's just laughable, but it definitely doesn't do much for their credibility.
@TheMythOfSisyphus there's a bunch of redditors expressing concerns about subscribing to the RHH track, now. There is something almost respectable about continuing to stand so firmly behind Da Brat like that. They think it's better than Snoop Dogg.
I think it answers a lot of questions about why I usually pass on their RHH picks, IF it isnt just them trying to push their Lil Kim, Da Brat, and Camp Lo pressings and throwing a few better ones on there to make it seem more real.
@dhodo I actually like Camp Lo and was happy with the selection, but I wouldn't rate it as one of my favorites of the 90s, by far. Based on this list, VMP is almost done reissuing the 10 best RHH 90s records already. Nothing more to see here.
For having a dedicated track to the genre, they’ve had a tremendous amount of duds and mediocre picks. Some of this may be out of their hands with getting the rights to do a lot of the cool shit that needs repressed but that track has been disappointing to me personally.
@wingclipper I bring it up a lot, but I can only imagine subbing for 3 months and getting T.I., Lil Wayne, and Juvenile back to back to back, if I wasn't a huge Southern rap fan. That's a very specific type of rap with no 8 Ball & MJG or Three 6 even mixed in. Their biggest issues are variety & depth for me
There’s no NaS’ Illmatic. And there’s no Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt! Even if there were picks like Dr Dre’s The Chronic 2001, GZA’s Liquid Swords, The Pharcyde’s Bizarre Ride or Blowout Comb’s Digable Planets, I’d be like “yup”! De La Soul’s De La Soul is Dead is a stretch But Da Brat and Lil Kim in there....
Well you know Storf laid down the law and said no Nas. I think a staff member lost their virginity while da brat album was on, that’s the only explanation for somebody saying Da Brat was their favorite 90s rap album.
