My wife didn’t like them at first, then we watched Mistaken for Strangers and she loved it, and then I dragged her to a show, and now they are one of her favorite bands
I had a really hard time with The National as well. "Trouble Will Find Me" ended up being the album that clicked for me. Actually, it is really the only complete album of theirs that has clicked for me. I do like some other songs, but there's something about that record I really dig.
I’ve always thought they were okay but recently I have started liking them a lot more. I really dug Alligator when it first came out and then went a long time without listening to them. Not sure what made them click for me again recently tho.
As a very partisan National fan, I'm a bit biased. However, I will say Sleep Well Beast seems to be a perfect album for our present situation. At least, when I drove around the other day, it just seemed to perfectly fit the mood outside my dashboard. Give it a shot. And Trouble Will Find Me.
Until it catches you at the right mindset it can feel a tad pedestrian but if you are lucky enough to have the music come to you when you are in the right headspace it can become revelatory.
@scotthilk LOL! If I recall correctly. I spammed the fuck out your post with a bunch of National videos. Sorry about that. Sometime my enthusiasm gets the best of me.
@TenderLovingKiller® Hah! I appreciated it actually. It’s not like I hate them - I appreciate them and I’m a casual listener but nothing that strikes my brain chords. A+ for effort and helping me digest them!
