The May 2025 Spin Challenge - Music, Music, Read All About It!

Day 8 - Miles: The Autobiography - Miles Davis with Quincy Troupe

Wow, don't meet your heroes. Miles really tells us a lot in this book, and it ain't all pretty.

Play an artist that you look beyond their shortcomings or bad deeds and can still enjoy
OR
Play some Miles

Miles definitely covers both prompts for me.

Day 1 - Play something that reminds you of a specific point in your life

Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door came out when I was in 8th grade. I clearly remember sitting in music class and listening to this album. It was cool to have a music teacher that played things like this.

When I finally procured my own copy of this (if memory serves I got it through Columbia Record club and probably never paid for it 🤣 ) I was delighted to see that the inner sleeve was paint with water. I never did finish painting it, there are only a few swashes of color on it.

Day 9 - How Music Works - David Byrne
I'll be honest, this was a DNF. I kept meaning to get back to it and still haven't.

Play some Talking Heads or a David Byrne project

Well, I got this book for Christmas, and haven't started it yet. Less excited about digging into it now.

Going with a David Byrne project. I have a number of releases from his Luaka Bop label, this one being my first introduction to it and the band. His work with the label has certainly opened my ears to a host of artists I wouldn't have been familiar with otherwise.

Day 5 - No One Here Gets Out Alive - Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman

The Doors - The Doors

Remember what I was saying about Pink Floyd, about it being to to pull off my shelf and spin because I listen to it too often back in High School well that goes for the Doors too. This challenge prompted me to finally queue up the Rhino Hi-Fi edition that’s resided in my “new additions” stack for a few months now. This does sound fantastic, I will still need to get to LA Woman at some point.

I have a very vivid memory from when I was about 7-8 years old (maybe 9) of my Aunt driving my sisters and I to our grandmother's house in her Mustang. We were driving up a hill, windows down and Light My Fire was blaring on the radio. (Remember terrestrial radio would play long songs? I'm old...)

Whenever I hear the song I am transported back to that moment, wind blowing in my hair (I was in the back seat on the driver's side)

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

I try not to think about it
I didn't buy tix for this tour. Metacritic's score of Pink Elephants is not good. 👀

That said, I ALWAYS have a blast at their shows. So hard to reconcile :(

I tried listening to the new album today and stopped because it was boring and I felt it wasn’t safe to listen to while I was driving
I read this review earlier, and that was enough for me.

I think I've only heard "Year of the Snake" on SiriusXMU which was meh to me. Maybe another track with Regine on vocals (her songs are always hit or miss, though Sprawl is fucking fantastic) I'll prob try to listen at some point, but I am so glad that I didn't pre-order the album (when I saw the price I literally laughed out loud)

Hyden’s never been a big Arcade Fire fan but honestly not much post-The Suburbs has been super entertaining anyways. It’s strange that Lorne Micheals seems to be a big fan since they played the SNL 50 concert and now are playing SNL tomorrow night.

Yeah, the SNL gigs was a big part of that review. I did enjoy Everything Now and Reflektor, those tracks translated really well live.

Yes! We got Angel Olsen opening that tour, and the GA around the boxing ring was not too crowded. Gave the show an intimate feel for an arena.
We went in at doors and got a spot right next to the gate where they entered the ring. When the show ended, they all walked out with Pres Hall Jazz Band right next to us and we high fived all of them. Was a super fun night.

Uggghhh.... oh Win :(
