J-Jazz (Japanese Jazz)

Amazing. Thanks!! I also had Hal’s and Nakano on my list, but this is a great resource (recognizing some might be out of date)
Hal's is great, it's his son running it now, but selection can be limited and prices are up, the dude from Seeed in Osaka also a nice guy. ArtRock in Kyoto is good but haven't been in awhile, - HMV Shinjuku just moved to a new location that kinda sucks, also the HMV retail stores are really moving to new product only - have to say Disk Union is really the only place I buy records, I like Judgment Records as Hanawa-san is another OG jazz legend, but his prices have gone nuts - - koenji is a dope little town so worth visiting Ogawa-san, he's chatty and likes tourists, but don't expect to walk away with any minty treasures (personally I think he grades way too aggressively, been saying this for a while). pro-tip Disk Union doesn't list new releases on their website for a week (I think as ive definitely seen things in the new release bins that aren't online) so you may luck into some stuff. There's also a Jet Set in Shimo-kitazawa so you don't have to go to Kyoto for that, but their stuff is basically all new. If you've got cash and want to spend on the best stuff go see Jaro, but he's hard to deal with and find stuff and have to pay in cash.

overall record buying in Japan isn't what it was even 18 months ago (forget 20 years ago when I started going), most of the stores are filled with tourists and prices are high so regular Japanese can't afford to buy as much. I hate to say it but its also starting to get really picked out on used vinyl (quality down, prices up) and smaller stores are basically using discogs to price - lately ive been looking for super cheap stuff that sounds awesome outside of Jazz and Soul genres....or pick up some used Luxman gear while the dollar is still strong...but Japan is no longer cheap ;-(

but its a wonderful place to visit and your are guaranteed to have an amazing time!

Glad you're enjoying the Sullivan record it definitely smokes!

picked up the latest Craftman release today - the second record on the 'Smile" label - here

It really is an enjoyable trio record, a nice listen and a quality product - its a needle drop, they say so on the obi, they also say the original didn't have an obi and this one is made to look like what they (he? hanawa-san) thought it might look like - so much apologizing on a record is next level Japanese...but 5500 yen is getting out of hand, these new record prices are getting nuts....but and I know I say this a lot but im probably out of the game for awhile....also decided to leave Japan in the next few months....been a fun experience but Mexican food and American beef is way better than records....

How long have you been there?

Do you have more details on this new serie?

I've just updated Discogs entries for J-Jazz label Days of Delight : https://www.discogs.com/label/1793651-Days-Of-Delight?page=1

They might be the best modern J-Jazz label in Japan right now. There are a lot of great young music players to be discovered as well as legends such as Hidefumi Toki, Kosuke Mine, Mabumi Yamaguchi. Each entry gives one (or more) Youtube videos with snippets.

And yes I have all the 50ish releases of this label at home

I received a newsletter from HMV last night. Apparently there is a new Ryo Fukui live recording coming in June.
Also, Superfly Records will release a J-Jazz album from Shinsuke Fujieda Group

To end, I recently purchased Project Re:Vinyl and TBM reissues from DubStore.fr. They are by far the cheapest option I found to have these Japanese records. They are connecteted to RecordCity in Japan and have tons of Japanese records in store, both new and used. I ordered 5 PRV and 3TBM and saved something like 15€ on each record compared to how much I usually spend at my local. They ship to Europe but also offer International shipping options (can't comment on these prices). Worth a look.
So sometimes things just happen that are funny...so from your post I checked out the Fujieda-san group and saw the release was sold out (or unavailable at the usual sites here in Japan) but I really liked the modal stylings and locked in groove sound....So I randomly take a trip out to Kichijoji to take a last walk around and stumble into the HMV there (obvs) and there's a display of the record AND more importantly Fujieda-san himself with a band set up and they have just started a set - 6 piece band (inc African style drum and violinist) - really like his sound...cant listen to the record so can't report on that but typical highest quality level on packaging...off to Toshio Matsuura tomorrow at Bar Stereo for one last set...
