4 - Muad'Dib: This little mouse is resourceful. Play something by an artist that made the most of the resources of the recording studio.

Todd Rundgren "Something / Anything?" (1972 Bearsville; 2022 RSD 45rpm reissue)
There is even a vocal clip of Todd talking about the "sounds of the studio" (which was sampled by Hot Chip on Shake a Fist).

This album came to mind as I was reading a Reddit AMA with Paul Leary regarding the recent Butthole Surfers reissues, and one of the engineers who worked on this album hopped in to talk about the recording process (splicing tapes together, backwards recordings etc). A good read if you expand out the top response.

With Lo-Fi the lack of studio wizardry is an asset. Muddle sound, tape noise, tracking errors are all things that most try To eliminate when recording but for Lo-Fi artists this is thought of as part of the charm.

3 - Lisan al Gaib: This means "the voice from the outer world." Play something from outside your part of the world.

An Australian band fronted by a guy named Tex.

Even though Australia is half a world away and I've never been there, I feel a much deeper connection to it than our stateside Tex.

Such a brilliant band name.

Day 05: Gom Jabbar
Play something with some venom to it.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard - Petrodragonic Apocalypse; Or, Dawn Of Eternal Night: An Annihilation Of Planet Earth And The Beginning Of Merciless Damnation

Fun Fact: Gila Monsters are one of the few species of venomous lizards in the world.

Mega Fun Fact: its venom has been used in the development of revolutionary weight loss medication Ozempic.

Day 5

Here’s a cat that’s been known to pit a little piss and vinegar into his music and that’s what this whole album is about:

5 - Gom Jabbar: Play something with some venom to it.

Angry Neil is pretty great. When I saw him on the tour for this album there was an audience member heckling him during the Monsanto Years portion of the show, and Neil stopped the show and told the guy to fuck off. Also Jenny Lewis opened, and was grooving side stage during Neils set near where I was on the rail, making the show all the better.

I'll also go with Neil today, and his dig at Crosby, Stills and Nash.

So I got bored and left them there
They were just dead weight to me
Better down the road without that load

The shut up and play your music contingent with Neil especially drives me bonkers. Like seriously, have you not ever listened to his music.
