After a slight delay due to a lower-body injury, Mike Hoffman is set to make his Montreal Canadiens debut against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, head coach Dominique Ducharme announced.

The Canadiens signed the 31-year-old to a three-year, $13.5-million deal as an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Hoffman suffered the injury before going to Montreal and was initially expected to miss the first week-and-a-half of the regular season.

That puts his recovery slightly ahead of the originally targeted Oct. 23 game against the Detroit Red Wings as his debut.

"The body feels good and I'm ready to go," Hoffman said Monday before receiving the green light on Tuesday, according to The Athletic's Arpon Basu.

Hoffman was on the third line at morning skate.

The Canadiens have been held winless through the first three games of the season and have scored just three goals. The typically productive Hoffman has 189 career goals in 545 contests, 67 of which have come on the man advantage. The Canadiens' power play has gotten off to an 0-for-11 start.

Forward Adam Brooks is also expected to make his Montreal debut on Tuesday in the place of the injured Jake Evans. The Canadiens claimed the 25-year-old off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs last week.

Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
DAMNIT! I was CERTAIN Yanni was gonna make it back before Hoffman! Oh well

Legendary New York Islanders forward Mike Bossy revealed on Tuesday that he's stepping away from his role with TVA Sports to battle lung cancer.

"Today, it's with great sorrow that I must take myself off your screens for an obligatory break," Bossy wrote. "A necessary pause during which I'll receive treatment for lung cancer. It's 1-0 for now, but I haven't said my last word."

Bossy, 64, has been a color commentator with the Quebec-based sports channel since 2015.

"I can assure you all that I intend to fight with all the determination and all the spirit that you have seen me display on the ice and in my game," Bossy said.

"The battle I am about to wage will not be easy. Know that I will give 100%, nothing less, with the objective of meeting you again soon, after a very eventful hockey game."

The Hall of Famer spent 10 seasons in the NHL - all with the Islanders - and recorded 573 goals with 553 assists in 752 games. Bossy won the Stanley Cup four consecutive times from 1980-83, has the third-highest all-time average points scored per contest in NHL history, and is one of five players to score 50 goals in 50 games.

New Jersey Devils phenom Jack Hughes suffered an apparent injury on Tuesday against the Seattle Kraken.

Hughes was rubbed out along the boards by Jeremy Lauzon late in the opening frame. The 2019 No. 1 overall pick was favoring his upper body as he left the ice and didn't return for the start of the second period.

Hughes scored two goals in the Devils' opener on Friday and already recorded an assist during Tuesday's first period. He finished second on the team with 31 points in 56 games a year ago.

The Tampa Bay Lightning placed forward Nikita Kucherov on long-term injured reserve Tuesday, according to CapFriendly.

This guarantees the Russian superstar will miss at least 10 games and 24 days. It also means the $9.5-million average annual value on Kucherov's contract won't count against the cap for the time being.

Kucherov departed Saturday's game against the Washington Capitals with what appeared to be a lower-body injury after colliding with Garnet Hathaway.

Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said Monday that the ailment is "definitely not a day-to-day thing" and that Kucherov is "going to be out for a while."

Kucherov spent the entirety of the 2020-21 campaign on LTIR while recovering from offseason hip surgery, allowing the Lightning to stay cap compliant without trading away any key players. He returned for the playoffs and helped guide the Bolts to their second straight Stanley Cup.
