Pre-Order Thread

I don't even think the increase in variants has much to do with the backlog. They may be pressing 10 different variants, but they're not pressing 10 times as many albums to just sit on shelves.

It has a little because coloured pressings take longer because they have to thoroughly clean the press between colours to stop contamination whereas that is not necessary between pressings with only black. But the real issue is sales and demand outstripping pressing capacity by a pretty large margin.

If it is not being sold anywhere else with a t shirt, it's an exclusive. May not be what we wanted, but surely is an exclusive.
I actually got the Abbey Road vinyl/bundle T Shirt bundle on Black Friday last year. Not an ideal "exclusive" but the shirt was actually pretty cool and I still wear it.

I don't know man, go look at the new vinyl listings at Bullmoose sometimes and see everything that is getting pressed. It is insane, Never heard of half of it or it is some janky soundtrack that didn't need to be pressed.

I'm sure all of us haven't heard more than half of the stuff getting pressed. But if a band like My Morning Jacket would press, say, 20k copies of their new album because they're most likely going to sell that many, splitting that up into 10 different variants of 2k isn't the main issue for plants being backed up. They're not pressing 20k copies of each variant. All the random RSD shit that no one's interested in is a much bigger issue.

I'm not sure people understand what exclusive means anymore...

Surprised no one posted yet, but a live recording of Coltrane’s A Love Supreme is getting a release. Very excited for it and interested to hear how it’ll turn out. It’s an amateur recording but sounds like it was very well recorded and the tapes were in excellent condition.

To be fair it does say "Target Exclusive Bundle".
I meant to quote the Wal-Mart one too, which I couldn't tell if it came with anything extra... but also said exclusive. I feel like... the T-Shirts exclusive, but putting "Wal-mart Exclusive" or "Target Exclusive" on the record as a sticker is dishonest.

I hear what you're saying but if it's like Abbey Road the T Shirt actually comes packaged in a box with the vinyl, so technically the package you are buying is a Target Exclusive. I get the point you're trying to make but as someone considering but that Target exclusive bundle I'm going to keep disagreeing with you on this one 😁.

I mean we are all just speculating. RSD has been printing lots of “pointless” records for years and it is a problem for a minute around rsd. This is clearly more. I think it’s a little bit of everything posted here… colorways causing stopping between pressings, demand, needless pressings, not enough plants, the loss of one of the major providers of lacquer, Covid, more RSD and supply chain issues.

20 k records printed in black will take less time than 20k pressed in blue smurf fairy sparkle will take less time then 20k printed in 20 different colorways.

Of course, there are a ton of factors that have contributed to the incredible delays we're seeing now. From what I've read from several labels, though, the backlog from RSD has downstream effects, too. I'm sure it's more time-consuming and labour-intensive to do multiple variants of the same record, but it's still gotta be less time than making new plates, etc. for each new record.

We all complain about this stuff but they all get posted in this thread and a lot of us buy them. The problem's not going to go away unless new (quality) plants pop up and some other infrastructure is improved. Or the bubble bursts, whichever happens first.
