Then I’d go direct drive if the only consideration is sound quality
There’s lots of great belt drive tables out there, and some rather crappy direct drive models.

Your a bit under budget for VPI minus there entry level. I would look at the Technics decks if he does not mind direct drive, the guys here can help you zero in on the model.
Use the extra cash on a good cart and phono pre and records if there is any left.

Of course. You're right I should have been more specific: A technics 1200GR is on budget, no fuss and by all account sounds great. If looks is not an issue, this is a good candidate.
The only issue you’ll have with a Technics is actually getting one. They are moving production from Japan to Malaysia and they are sold out everywhere. It’s a waiting list situation. I know because I’ve been on one since April with only the promise of “sometime this summer” for delivery.

I know we've talked about this before, but I just cannot stress enough what an important part of the gear your actual room is. I just rearranged my whole music room to help optimize my sound. The only investment was an extra shelf in the closet for CDs and some sweat equity moving nearly 800 albums.
In the original layout we had the albums on the left wall and the speakers slightly right of center in the room. Now the albums are all behind the listening position, the speakers are centered, spread wider, and have significant toe in vs previously pointing straight into the room. The difference in the center image, depth, and detail are all highly impressive so far. Just a reminder that sometimes you can get a lot more out of year existing gear without spending on new stuff.

Agreed, my only retort to that is that for many it's not something you can change much, if at all, due to various factors. I know I'm kind of stuck, but over time, and in listening, I identified a heavy reflection point/corner that I could correct and will, but I can't do much more than that. Once some of the "chicks" start leaving the nest we'll see what options present themselves

And the more limitations you have, I think the more important speaker selection becomes.
I love towers, but I do often wonder if bookshelves and subs might be easier to tame reflections in my room.

Which model are you waiting for?
An SL-1200G has been on my buy list for a while but I'd been putting it off - having spent a year away for work and probably leaving this August for another six months, it hasn't made sense to get new gear just to leave. From talking with a few suppliers in the U.S., I hear July-ish to "30 to 60 days". I spoke to one dealer who has 10 on order and 5 sold with people on a waiting list.
If I'm correct, Technics already made some of their stuff in Malaysia?
Any thoughts on moving their higher end stuff from Japan? I saw some decrying the end of a legacy (i.e. Made in Japan) for the brand and a few talking about quality issues. I personally don't get too caught up on "Made in...." wherever. Made in the U.S.A. or Designed in the U.S.A., Made in China means little to me. End user experience does. If we're talking about handmade or hand-wired whatever then, yes, I want to know there is artisanship (regardless of country); but production line, as long as the design is quality and there is QC, I don't care who is running that line.
I feel like the legacy thing will just become a badge of honor for those who care to wear it. The quality thing will bear out in the facts of operation and performance.
This is where I'm at. I went with bookshelf with no ports from Zu. Once they got broken in it's REALLY hard to have them in a bad position. You can improve a bit, but basically with slight toe-in and making them wide enough and pointed at the listening height, they just work... on shelf, off shelf, on stand, whatever.

I mostly agree with this to some extent, especially in regards to a product like this. I think the more cogent point about moving factories is the real possibility that they cannot perfectly duplicate the manufacturing chain they had going on in Japan. Now that knife cuts both ways. It's entirely possible that certain deviations might actually result in a table with tighter tolerances than we were seeing from Japan. It can just as easily mean there's lower tolerances than before. The fact is, it's a whole different place with different people, culture, and supply chains. It will result in a different product to some extent.

If you have a HD7450 that works, be happy. My favorite CD player that I owned was a HD7600. It quit reading discs, and needed an IC that was obsolete. Pre internet, it got junked.

But what I have much more control over is where I sit when I listen to those speakers, and since my recent switch to Harbeths, I've been doing a lot of near-field listening, within 2-3 feet of the speakers, and it's a lot more revelatory than the experience of listening from my couch, which is about 9 feet away.
I was waiting for a 1200G but I changed the order to a 1210GR. I need a bunch of dental work (scheduled for July) which is killing my budget. I may say to hell with it and switch back.
As far as the factories go, everything Technics with the exception of the turntables are already being made in Malaysia. I’m not seeing an issue. In fact, I’m hoping the quality goes up. The G has had a well documented issue with platters that aren’t true. Some have been obviously “wobbly”. A bad one is really bad, and I almost cancelled my order entirely.

So, I'm loving the new turntable...when I listen to a pristine pressing. But if there is any surface noise at all, it is soooo much louder than my old one. I'm getting so much more popping on many of my records. Especially in the first couple minutes of play. I don't understand it. I feel like there is something I'm missing

Just checking, do you have any kind of record cleaner?
