Pre-Order Thread

Yeah. Sort of a stupid concept. Pay $40 for a record, and if you re selected in the Wax Mage raffle you get the opportunity to drop another $75 on the same album. How lucky. :cautious:

It would be better if 25 lucky people that purchased the album were upgraded to the Wax Mage variant.

Not a big fan of that dude that runs Too Many Records at all tbh. Love this album and Marcus D along with all the great guest artists but the fact that it's being put out by them is having me have second thoughts at the price point.

I remember seeing this release on reddit a week or or two ago and a "troll" dared to bring this up which was followed up by this response...
If you really only wanted one copy you could ask to return the original since it hadn't shipped yet and I'd happily refund. Literally no one did last time because some people like to support small labels/artists and other people are variant collectors. I hope your day gets better!

all he had to do was end it after the first sentence and it would have been a great reply but he has to throw those digs in which is a bad look for the owner of a label especially imo. some people just don't like to spend well over a $100 on a single release to have two "rare" variants.

then he has another reply minutes later after he was able to search that "trolls" post history and starts reaming him over some of his past postings to further prove how ridiculous this guy is to ask if he could only buy a single variant.. at least he is offering to cancel the regular edition which was good to see but the guy just annoys me with his smug and vinyl elitist attitude (I get major comic book dude from The Simpsons vibes from him). A lot of people do seem to love the guy so maybe i'm just getting old though haha

To turn this post back around to what I was most curious about, has anyone here actually got any of his past releases (the label Too Many Records)? I think this release is number 10 or 11 on it.

I totally agree with you. I don't care for him either. Rubs me the wrong way.
Really I kind of feel a bit sad for the guy. He buys like 300 albums at a time just to open them on his channel. It's compulsive hoarder behavior. Honestly, you don't have enough time in your life to constantly listen and absorb/appreciate that much music. Consumption for internet views.

I did buy his Nacho Picasso/Blue Sky Black Death release and it turned out well.

People on Vinyl Collective have an extreme distaste for the guy. But that crowd over there is a bit more fiery than the friendly folks here at N & G.

Dude is a mess. Seems like a guy who bought a record once and just went off the deep end in the hobby.

That's the release I originally found out about the label so that's good to hear. Seems like reviews on Discogs are mostly good as well for past releases so i'll probably still end up getting this one since most of the money should be going to Marcus D anyways who def. deserves the support.

Yeah, I can see VC ripping this guy apart very easily haha. I used to post there a lot, they get a bit extreme sometimes but tbh most people they go at usually at least somewhat deserve it like this guy. He's not worth all that energy though, I have avoided his Youtube channel for years but the hoarding label sounds about right.

PaperBag has a magenta variant of the new Sarah Neufeld record available, limited to 100. Prices are in Canadian dollars, turns out to be about $31 US shipped.
Paper Bag is such a great label. The Rural Alberta Advantage are on Paper Bag and I always order from them when RAA drops new records.

Well... in case you don't know it, he's on here. Maybe he's reading this. Any of you can feel free to tag him.

A couple of things... he pops up in the hip hop thread occasionally, but only ever to plug something and doesn't fare well. The energy is different in there. It's different on the forum, in general, but you're really not going to tell people what's what on that thread. Can't really try and bring that infomercial energy in and try to chime in on street rap like a paid Ronco spot from the 90s.

As for the "label," I only bought the Supasorta Human release, which was specifically advertised as being limited to 100 copies in his video, and then, after I called it out, was "clarified" that it wasn't, but that 100 was the threshold that he needed to meet. It's pretty easy to NOT state specifically that something is super limited to only 100 copies with no more to be pressed, but that's what happened. In fact, he used the low pressing number to justify a markup in costs, which immediately falls apart when you consider that, when all was said and done, it actually became a larger run than previous releases. It's just a Lil Ugly Mane side project/production effort and the angle was transparent and the intentional misinformation (read lie) was obvious, but I was going to pick it up if anyone ever pressed it, so I did. You can find our actual back and forth in here around that time, if you really wanted to search for it, but that whole angle was bullshit. It is what it is. (Maybe it was on reddit, too). No real feelings on it, but just be straight up.

It was blatant false advertisement and defensiveness, but, it doesn't matter to me. I know that I'm capable of some ruthlessness, so I save it for real shit. I didn't go in full on him over that. I'm not trying to knock him, but I feel he has his lane playing expert to those that are just getting into the hobby who don't really know a ton about collecting -- or maybe even music. That's cool, I'm just not the demographic. That's the vibe I get, anyway, and it's probably a difficult thing to bring in and sell here. This is a community of people. Not everyone was super cool to me when I joined the VMP forum, at first, but I took it as people protecting their community. If it comes across at all like you only show up to try and work people or promote something, not everyone is going to be very receptive. Once you've proven you're here to contribute, it's going to come across differently. Maybe it's hard to enter into a new space and come across well. I don't know. A lot of us probably aren't the right demographic, whereas those only dipping their feet into vinyl and want some hand holding might be. I like to believe that most of us on here know enough to be beyond ego with this stuff. We don't need a "record master" telling us what's cool. Whenever I see someone critical on here -- from an audiophile perspective, for example, or something that could otherwise be read as elitist in another space -- it's always very genuine and intended to be helpful and express their own personal experiences. We have Merzbow fans tagging other members on Taylor Swift releases and vice versa. It's what I've always appreciated about this place.

The Nacho Picasso thing is interesting to me, simply because I live in Seattle and never thought twice about the guy. I do know his girlfriend, though, and she's super cool. She used to work with my wife. They moved to LA, together, I believe. It's just interesting to see someone who was local and never did anything for me get hype elsewhere.

Well damn, glad i'm clearly nowhere alone in how I feel about him then. Speaking on pushing the "super limited to 100" white lie kind of advertising which he clearly knew what he was doing. There's been a subtle thing about this Marcus D release that has bothered me in a similar fashion to that where he makes sure every mention of this release involves it being a Nujabes record (like on here he said "it's basically a Nujabes record"). He leaves it very vague and I noticed a person or two asked on reddit how exactly Nujabes was involved and the dude never responded that I seen to clarify. Just shitty imo to use a deceased legend as extra hype to push the record. I did a little searching and every recent mention of this record pressing by him on the internet I seen has a vague Nujabes mention. The only spot there isn't one that I have noticed is on Marcus D's actual bandcamp page. I obviously completely understand the similarity in style and the featured artists which could be talked about in one of his youtube videos so he can elaborate a bit more and not just use Nujabes name as a cheap selling tactic. I know most probably wouldn't even think twice about this but to me it's just ugly and unnecessary.

I agree though about just letting most of it go as I have zero interest in getting into some online back and forth with the guy as overall I don't think he's doing anything majorly shady but still plenty to turn me off from having any interest to hear what he has to say or look at any of his releases unless it's something like this which i'm genuinely interested in regardless of who's releasing it.

I also like the "record master" reference @Dead C .. That's pretty much spot on how I feel all around. This is the first vinyl community i've been around at least where people can have wildly different tastes but still genuinely respect each other and it's honestly awesome to see and the main reason I visit as often as I do. There's def. people i'd classify as legit audiophile "experts" on here but I never get the feeling they look down on anyone here and that's extremely rare on the internet period.

He might not be the coolest dude in the vinyl scene, and his “limited” advertising gimmick DOES strike a cord (Not because he uses it but because he uses it while also talking shit about other companies doing similar tactics). BUTTTTTT let’s remember that he does browse the forums here and he is a person and let’s not be net bangers.
